Anoka is a city in Anoka County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 18,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The city was founded on November 15, 1859 by Alfred Sibley and his wife Hilda Sibley as a post office called Blooming Prairie. In 1863 it became a town when it incorporated as Anoka. On January 1, 1876, the name of the town was changed to Anoka after its founder's daughter, Anna Ladd Anka. The current name comes from General George Custer's last words before being killed in action at Little Bighorn on July 25th, 1886: "Anoka Sioux will not be surrendered." In 1973-1974 the city had an event where they collected $1 million in candy canes which went into fundOperation Smile which helps children with smile wounds or other injuries. Anoka also has been home to many munitions plants over time including: Armour Ammunition Plant (1922), Pekin Arms Ammunition Plant (1930), Gartner Ammunition Plant (1940), and Hammered Metal Manufacturing Company (1945). The plant closed in 1975 but parts of it still stand today and are used for storage purposes including some buildings that were built back in 1922 and are now known as "Hammered Metal Headquarters". Anokahouse LLC is a restaurant located inside of Armour Ammunition Plant that opened up in early 2018 and took over the former location of Target across from Pekin Arms Ammunition Plant which closed down in 2015 due to lack of customership.

In 1916, Anoka won the first municipal election held in Minnesota after statehood. The city has since grown rapidly and now has a population of over 127,000 people. The history of Anoka begins with its founding as an agricultural town on the banks of the Missouri River by Alexander J. Watt and his family. Watt had come from Scotland to become a landowner and entrepreneur in what is now Minneapolis-St Paul County. He built a gristmill on the river bank for grinding corn, wheat,orge oilseed rape and other crops into flour and oats for sale to settlers east of the river. His son, James Watt Jr., continued his father's business interests until he turned it over to his grandson James Watt III in 1884. In 1854, when Minnesota became a state, Anoka County was established within it; Anoka was named for General George Armstrong Custer who died during the American Civil War (1861-1865). That same year, James Watt III sold his business interest to John Hennepin County Commissioners; however, this transaction did not bring about long-term stability or prosperity for either party involved as neither side could agree on control of the mill sites or mills themselves should one side sell while another unsuccessfully attempted to purchase them back from their successors years later. In 1861-1865 Custer's death caused great stir throughoutMinnesota as well as acrossthe United States due to America's participation in World War I but little actual change took place withinAnoka County itself during those years aside from increasing numbers of farmers moving into new areas around town including rural sections near Byford Lake that bordered Onalaska Creek (now Ramsey) nd Hillsboro (now Wadena). In 1916 William Jennings Bryan ran for Congress against incumbent Samuel Richardson even though many residents felt he would not do anything about improving living conditions while rich men like Richardson were doing just fine without any help from them! Bryan ultimately won handily becoming one of only two Ulysses S Grant Democrats ever elected president! Immediately following his inauguration festivities taking place at Saint Louis Cathedral restaurant along Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis days before Christmas that year much work needed to be done immediately due largelyto inflation rates which had reached unprecedented levels at that point! As part of President Grant's New Deal program various programs were put into effect such as electricity deregulation which led directly to increased production at local businesses through both private enterprise and government sponsored projects like MNsure! Continued growth followed during World War II with tens if not hundreds more jobs being created right hereabouts thanks largely again to government sponsorship programs like MNsure despite some shortfalls when compared with other partsofthe country especially during difficult wartime times! Today With all that technology has brought about more jobs than ever before we can only imagine how things will develop going forward?
