Anoka is a small town in the Minnesota Valley region of the United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name Anoka comes from Dakota Sioux and means "place of many fish." The first settlers in what is now Anoka were Dakota Sioux who came to this area in 1847 as part of the Great Lakes Fur Trade Expedition. They founded a village on an island in Lake Superior called Red Cloud's Prairie, which they named after their leader, Crazy Horse (Crazy Fox). In 1854, the United States bought Red Cloud's Prairie from the Dakotas and renamed it Anoka after General David Hunter's troops had passed through earlier that year. In 1862, Major General Simon Cameron used Anoka as his winter headquarters while he fought against Native Americans near present day Duluth. He later said that he would not have been able to win if it hadn't been for "the good people" living around him – those who helped build his fortifications and provide food and shelter during his siege of Fort Snelling. Since its incorporation as a municipality in 1954, Anoka has developed into one of the most vibrant communities in central Minnesota; with businesses such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, Toys “R” Us and KB Toys being among its biggest employers.
