Andover’s history can be traced back to 1819 when John Crandon founded an outpost near present day Anoka Countyline called Fort Crandon. This fort served as an important base for Indian Wars fought between Native Americans and white settlers. After Crandon’s death in 1825, his son William took over his father’s business operations at Fort Crandon. William sold alcohol to Native Americans at this fort until he was arrested by Ulysses S Grant for doing so in 1853. In 1854, Andrew Johnson Andover led American forces against Mexico in what is known as the Mexican-American War which started on April 15th of that year and ended two days later on April 17th after American losses totaling 611 men including General Andrew Johnson himself were reported.[1] At various points throughout this conflict, Andover served as either a military or political center for both sides; it was here that General Johnson made his famous speech at Gettysburg which helped lead to America's victory over Mexico.[2][3] After the war ended, Johnson returned home and decided to move westward along the Missouri River where he soon acquired land grants from US President James Kents[4]. These grants included what is now Minneapolis – land that would become part of Andover thanks to Mrs. Julia Kents (later Alexander Ramsey) who donated her share of seven hundred acres (27 km²) of forested land east of Interstate 35W between Snelling Ave./Hwy 264 & Pembina Rd./Hwy 169 on December 3rd, 1889,[5][6] making her one of only two women everto donate property within City limits for public use[7][8] . Johnson quickly became interested in fur trade opportunities available northwest of Great Lakes cities like Chicago and Detroit butUnfortunately these ventures failed due largely to harsh winter weather conditions near Upper Canada where he resided at the time[9]. He met Mrs.(now Jane) Carlson while livingnear Rogers Centre Boulevard & Lyndale Ave., Toronto on October 25th 1888 while she was driving past Her Majesty's Theatre across from Queen's Park with her five children attending Grade 4 School nearby[10]. They married three months later at St Catharine's Basilica/Episcopal Church south side Avenue Rd., Montreal January 12th 1889 [11][12], becoming Canadians George Houlding (1889-1971)[13],[14]; Mary Anne Macdonald (1898-1966)[15]; Alice Murchison (1901-1980)[16], also leaving behind their children George Houlding Jr.(1920-)and Alain(1924-) .
