It was not until 1859 that the first iron-clad swivel was created which consisted of two circular pieces of metal placed side by side so that they would move independently when rotated. This allowed guns to be fired while being rotated around their axes, making it easier for infantrymen to aim them while moving through battlefields. Andover, Minnesota is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Hennepin and Ramsey counties. Andover is part of the Minneapolis–St.Paul metropolitan area. The town was founded by Emmett Andover in 1854 as a farmstead on the east side of what is now Hudson Street between Center Street and University Avenue. In 1881, Andover became an incorporated village after being granted a charter by the state of Minnesota. In 1911, it merged with neighboring Rochester to form one municipality with a combined population of 12,000 people. On January 1, 2013, Andover became a city under the terms of an agreement between its founders and Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges. Andover's history goes back to 1854 when Emmett Andover erected his farmstead on what is now Hudson Street between Center Street and University Avenue from land he had acquired from John Hellman within sight of his previous home in Rochester (now south central Minneapolis). At first there were only 24 residents living on the property which stretched from present-day Harrison Road north to Emerson Boulevard east; it included parts of what are today Park Place and Springdale Drive as well as current-day Hudson Street and University Avenue. The first post office opened in 1855 although no record exists to show how many letters were sent through that agency during that inaugural year alone! By 1861 it had grown to include two churches: First Presbyterian Church on Center Street east (later called Emmanuel Episcopal Parish) and Highland Baptist Church west (later called First Congregational United Methodist Church). Three years later fires destroyed both churches so construction began immediately on a new church located off present-day Patton Boulevard just north of Highway 7 where First Presbyterian would eventually stand until 1955 while Highland Baptist continued operations until 1958 when it also burned down – this time leaving only their belltower standing which served as both residences for ministers associated with both denominations until 1978 when they were replaced by Oneida Christian School buildings across Park Place from where they currently tower! In 1881 Andovers incorporation became possible due to passage by the state legislature of legislation authorizing municipalities within Hennepin County without cities having first been established; this occurred following annexation by neighboring Rochester into that county effective February 1, 1880 pursuant to similar legislation enacted in Hennepin County itself! The village followed suit less than two months later becoming one entity with voting rights equal to those enjoyed by townships within that county! Effective November 15th1891 all dwellings unoccupied for more than 60 days were forced or sold at auction thenceforth known as "Bidding Days" taking place every other week throughout winter culminating in final sale occurring SaturdayDecember 5th at 4pm each house generally yielding anywhere from $500-$2200 depending upon lots condition at that particular time! On January 1st 1913 Orville Noyes commenced construction on what would become modern day Soo Line Railroad station just south of Highway 7 about one mile west along present day Patton Boulevard opposite original parishhouse site now occupied by Erickson Ford dealership Hammonds Auto Parts store & Cafe & tap room . Work proceeded rapidly over ensuing six weeks resulting in station opening late May 13th 1913 prior thereto announced live via telecast nationwide thru mediums such as RKO Radio network ! Station features beautiful Beaux Arts Revival style architecture completed largely without assistance from local funds subscribed rather than funders expecting results !! Cemented platform finished ahead schedule utilizing latest technology !! By 1923 service had extended deep into Stroudsburg Township adjacent rural areas providing transportation Necessity not wanted !! A devastating fire destroyed Coopers landing boatyard & dockage facility situated southeast aspect Of town June 8th 1922 destroying much equipment valued at millions dollars making transport difficult then & still does today !! This event resulted in President Harding declaring National Emergency #27
