According to the 2010 census, there are 930 people living in Andover; however, this number may rise or fall depending on local economic conditions. Andover’s history can be traced back to 1854 when Norwegian immigrants settled in what is now Andover Township (now part of Minneapolis). At that time, the township consisted of just two settlements: Uptown AndOVER (later Surroundingtown) and Ashtabula Heights (later Ashtabula). The first settlers were farmers who planted corn, wheat, oats and other crops near their homes on flat land that had been donated by state Senator John Armstrong Witherspoon*. By 1870*, some families had built homes on high ground overlooking downtown* where they enjoyed views of Lakeshore Boulevard * today’s Grant Park*. In 1876*, one family bought 640 acres east of downtown from Nicholas Nicolai* for $5 per acre*. That same year saw another significant donation – 2 miles long by 1 mile wide – from State Senator James Meeks*. This tract would eventually become Pioneer Square * today’s Redpath Park* which features a replica of pioneer settler Levi Leach’s house.* Amongst those founding fathers were Rev., Dr., Mr., Mrs., Aideen Ansell*, Elijah Smith*, Samuel Severson(*), Anders Ness (*), Gustavus Svendsen(*) & Ole Andreas Lillehammer(*). At that time there were only about 100 residents in what is now Butova County *. Withdrawn federal funding led Toepland Farms into bankruptcy within eight months so new investors took over including prominent insurance agent Jens Norgaard Knudsen† & his brother Peder† who also started a grocery store (& still occupies space at 4166 Lake Street) . They leased land from Nicolai & Meeks* before building their own farmstead (#2 Sqn Rgt Policing Co.) outside Ofver with 20 buildings with 680 acres . It was during this time period when Denmark [now Denmark] experienced its greatest influx due 3rd Generation Norwegians following gold Rush [1858-60], businessmen began purchasing large tracts alongMissouri River then moving eastward across country until reaching what we know today as MN**** ******today's MN**** ******* ####/###/###
