In 1869, Elijah Hicks opened the first store in Alexandria. Hicks was a pioneer in selling goods to settlers on the new prairies of Minnesota. The town of Alexandria was founded in 1869 and quickly became known for its grain storage and flour mills. In 1902, the city bought land at the edge of town from the Hicks family and developed it into an entertainment district that included a movie theater, bowling alley, and several stores. In 1925, Alexandria became the capital of Minnesota when it was merged with other nearby towns to form the newly created Ramsey County.
