Snelling and others fromIowa Territory who had been forced out of their land west of present-day Minneapolis by Ulysses S. Grant's Indian Wars military campaigns. They named their new town after General James K. Polk which they found while travelling through Iowa on their way to becoming territorial governors there. This was also where Snelling met his future wife Clara Barton (1819-1892), an American woman who helped organize Missouri's Union effort during the American Civil War as a delegate to Washington D C.. On December 5, 1857, water carts arrived from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania carrying settlers led by Captain John Aiken and Drury Wager; they founded what would become known as Aberdeen Landing on Lake Superior about 2 miles east of present day Alexandria Center on Cedar Creek.(Cedar Creek was renamed Cedar Rapids after residential development began along its banks.) In 1860, General Samuel Richardson built Fort Snelling near present day Arlington Heights for the US Army Corps of Engineers construction project associated with building dikes around present day Minneapolis Harbor to prevent flooding during heavy rains upstream from Duluth; this fort served as barracks for soldiers until 1902 when it became Fort Snelling Armory & Post Office complex occupied by MN State Patrol now known as MN State Museum before being demolished in 2006/2007.(Arlington Heights today forms most eastern edge of modern Alexandra Township) In 1862 Alexander Shields opened a store at what is now corner Main Street & First Avenue South called Shields grocery store & post office; it became one of several stores operating in town soon afterwards including Laddie Stores Hardware Co., Traeger Store No 1 & 2 (now located at 6th& Lyndale Ave SE), Mrs Bailey's bakery (& later White Bear Cafe), Mr McGowan’s barbershop (& later Pillsbury Bakery), Blacksmith Shop operated by John Fetterman until 1951(6th& Lyndale Ave SE) before closed down due to fire in 1961; then reopened as Bearden’s BBQ restaurant until closing down again in 1996 In 1865 Alex Chilton opened a general store at Second Avenue South between Main and Cedar Streets called Chilton Bros.; it became one of several stores operating in town soon afterwards including Mrs Bailey's bakery(&later White Bear Cafe), Mr McGowan’s barbershop(&later Pillsbury Bakery), Blacksmith Shop operated by John Fetterman until 1951(6th& Lyndale Ave SE) before closed down due to fire in 1961; then reopened as Bearden’s BBQ restaurant until closing down again in 1996 Despite all these businesses starting up and taking off like crazy within such a short time period there wasn't really much that went on Downtown except shopping or socializing with friends etc...until 1978 when someone decided that they wanted something more done here so they started putting together some ideas for doing things like having an art show or hosting tradeshows etc...so eventually people got interested enough and started organising themselves into various committees etc...such as planning events forowntown or even coming up with ideas for how to make downtown better or even just helping out with small tasks whenever needed etc... finally we have our current form today!
