Alexandria is a city in McLeod County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,614 at the 2010 census. Alexandria is the namesake of Alexandria Township. The city and township were founded in 1871, and were named for Major General James Fenton (1795-1851), an American officer who served in the Mexican War and during the Indian Wars. The first post office was established in 1872, and the name of the city was changed to Alexandria in 1896. In 1907, McLeod County was organized, and Alexandria became one of its original townships. In 1912, it became a city. The present day downtown area was built between 1915-1920 by developers with help from United States President Woodrow Wilson when he visited Alexandria as part of his "World's Fair" program. At that time there were only two buildings remaining on Main Street—the old post office building (now called City Hall) and Fort Snelling Barracks (now Park Nicollet). A new jail/ courthouse complex was completed in 1928-29; this included a jail/court house annex now used as apartments or commercial property; also known as "The Palace". In 1954-1955, three large blocks of downtown were destroyed by a fire that started accidentally while firefighters were putting out another blaze; this led to what is now known as "The Great Fire." Despite this setback, development continued throughout the 1960s with suburbanization taking hold which has kept most of downtown streets closed to vehicular traffic since then save for two blocks near Nicollet Avenue where business owners allow limited parking for their customers within sight of their businesses. Today many aspects still reflect those days including some ancient buildings such as City Hall which retains its bell tower though originally designed without bells it has been replaced with modern equipment due to public outcry following an earlier attempt by previous management to remove them!

The Alexandria, Minnesota community of over 7,000 people was founded in 1882 when a group of farmers and fishermen decided to move from the small town of Alexandria, Illinois. The town had been destroyed by a fire in 1881 and its residents were forced to leave their homes. The new settlers set out on a quest for a new home that would protect them from the harsh winters and provide them with access to the natural resources they needed for their farmstead. By 1899, there were five churches in the community with membership totaling around 150 families. The economy of early Alexandria depended heavily on fishing until World War II when farming became more popular due to increased production opportunities brought about by technological advancements. In 1951, the village reached its peak with over 1,500 residents living within walking distance of each other. However, during the late 1960s through early 1970s, economic difficulties led to shrinking population rates as well as deterioration in infrastructure which contributed to problems such as water shortages and crime rates which have persisted into today. However, recent efforts by local officials have resulted in renewed hope for Alexandria’s future through projects such as revitalization of downtown areas; construction of new infrastructure; development of renewable energy resources; and support for culturalazation initiatives like art exhibits and music festivals.
