Southwick Township became independent within minutes of Alexander's death while Northwick Township remained under control of Alexander's family until it became part of Alexandria following his death in 1865. The first post office opened at Alexandria on July 25, 1884. By 1900 there were just six residents living there; all came from outlying farms near Bloomington or St Cloud which served as their homespun village center with stores, churches and schools-. One inhabitant wrote: "There are nostores hereabouts - we get our supplies from Minneapolis." At this time there were only two residences - one owned by Mrs Cripps (later Mrs Jenson) and the other by Mr Fenton (later Mayor). In 1905Alexander founded what would become known as Hennepin County Credit Union which soon acquired over $1 million worth of assets including land for a new campus east of town on University Boulevard now occupied by State Capitol Park & Annexes Historic District . That same year also saw another milestone for Alexandria when it incorporated as a municipality charter with limits on voting rights but unlimited income taxing power . From 1902 until its annexation into Minneapolis-St Paul in 1955 grain elevators dotted much rural farmland east of town - providing local farmers with needed access to affordable priced grains during hard times .
