Alexandria, MN is a municipality in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 523 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The Alexandria community began as a farming village on the edge of what is now Alexandria Township in 1871 when Hennepin County was organized from parts of Dakota and Ramsey counties. By 1893, only a few farms remained and the town site was surveyed by J.W. Ludden in 1894 but never built because of lack of money to do so. In 1907, lumberman George Prentice donated land for an municipal park that became known as Park Plaza after he died in 1925. In 1916-17, city voters passed a resolution authorizing incorporation as a municipality with full powers to pass its own ordinances and levy taxes without giving up its status as a county seat until such time as it obtained statehood; this vote marked the beginning of Alexandria's long association with Minneapolis as its municipal center while also helping to stimulate development within its boundaries once it achieved statehood. On February 12, 1917, Alexander Mills (a resident of Alexandria since before it became an incorporated community) was elected mayor pro tem following the death of Mayor Averill Higgins (who had served two terms). On November 3, 1918 election night during World War I when all municipalities were required to furnish information regarding residents' voting preferences for members of Congress who would be serving in that war zone; Alexandria voted against incorporation into Minneapolis because then-Mayor Charles Wirth refused to provide information about his support for war effort - an act which contributed significantly to his defeat three years later when he ran unsuccessfully for reelection against former Mayor John Broome (the son-in-law of recently deceased City Councilmember Mary Ewing). After Wirth's loss, he reorganized the city government into six wards effective January 1, 1920 under new rules established by Act 319 which divided all cities into five zones based on their population size and then assigned each ward one councilmember plus one delegate who represented them on committees related to public works and transportation

Alexandria is a small town in thecentral Minnesota county of Alexandria. It was founded in 1854 by John Witherspoon and his wife, Martha, on land donated by David McKay. The Town of Alexandria became a city in 1907. The population was 5,200 at the 2000 census. The town was named for Alexandria, Virginia, which was then part of Maryland and had been under British rule since 1755. In 1854, John Witherspoon and his wife Martha donated land to the town to build a community. Washington County was formed from portions of Goodyear Township in 1856 and Alexandria became part of Washington County. In 1907, when Minneapolis incorporated as a city, Alexandria became one of its first wards. The City Council voted to change its name to Alexandrian on January 1st that year in order to more accurately reflect its location within the city limits. The name lasted until 1975 when it changed again to honor Mayor Harry Edwards who died earlier that year. In 2006, the City Council decided against changing the name back to Alexandrian because it felt that it still referred too closely to Washington County which no longer exists as a separate county
