Alexandria, Minnesota was founded on December 12, 1871 by D.W. Alexander and H.H. Snider as a farming community in the Star-Kite area ofMN. The population of Alexandria at its inception was only two hundred people, but by 1881 it had grown to over one thousand people with a variety of businesses and farms including a sawmill, flour mill, distillery, bakery and several banks. The town prospered for many years until the early 20th century when large industries closed down or moved out of the area making Alexandria unable to support its own economy. In addition to its economic decline, Alexandria also experienced several natural disasters which caused significant damage including a devastating fire in 1901 which destroyed most of the town center; an ice storm in 1933 that caused extensive damage to homes and businesses; and a tornado in 1935 that devastated much of the town center and killed many people
