The first post office was opened December 3rd, 1856 and the name of the town changed from "Albert Lea" to "Minnesota" on January 1st, 1861 when it became a county seat of Ramsey County. In 1898, citizens voted to annex what is now south side of Main Street into their new city limits; this annexation created one of Minnesota's largest cities and one of its most vibrant neighborhoods today! In 1907, Addison Wirth Head developed an overpass across US Highway 10 which crossed Lake Minnetonka and connected Albert Lea with downtown Minneapolis through four lanes of traffic each way! This innovative road design helped make Albert Lea one of the busiest intersections in rural America during that time period! In 1913, Strom Thurmond (D–SC), then Representative from South Dakota (then part of Dakota Territory), moved into his first home in what is now northwest corner lot on First Street just east of Center Court Square; he would later become United States Senator from South Dakota! On eveningof August 15th 1915 an El Paso Army depot train derailed near intersectionof First Avenue & Center Court Square after striking a boulder while passing through; 11 people were killed including Mrs Fenton Flagg - widowof Captain James A Henson who perished along with her 4 children when his Pullman Sleeping Car #4 derailed November 14th 1914 en route from Sioux Falls SD to Great Falls MT
