Albert Lea, Minnesota is a town located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 2,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Albert Lea was Elias Dehn, who arrived from Germany in 1853 and homesteaded land on School Street east of present day Albert Lea Avenue. In 1857, John Aiken founded Aiken & Company which operated a sawmill and gristmill on School Street for twenty years until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1869, Norwegian immigrant Ole Olsen purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land southeast of Albert Lea from Hennepin County for $8 per acre ($67/ha). Olsen named his new community "Albert Lea" after his father's birthplace in Norway—Aalborg (now Oslo). He built a log cabin and began to cultivate soil with hoes and sickles before selling his holdings to other settlers in 1870-72. By 1886, Albert Lea had a school, dance hall and post office with a population of 190 people; it had also several stores and two churches. During the late 19th century growth rates were much higher than today because transportation improved making goods available throughout the Twin Cities area which made rural life more feasible for farmers; however some people left town during this time period when they became prosperous elsewhere due to railroads being built through central Minnesota as well as better business opportunities nearby cities like Minneapolis and St Louis Park which lured many farmers out of their homes into those larger townships/cities where jobs could be found instead of living on one's farmstead with all its isolationism potential consequences that sometimes led to social unrest among pioneer families when faced with not having access to critical food items necessary for their survival such as water or timber resources necessary for agriculture that often lead to conflict between men over control over these resources among other factors like competition from neighboring farms seeking access to same marketshare values driven farming practices) .
