It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, which has a population of 6,021,000 as of 2019. Albert Lea is located onthe western edge of the Great Lakes region and is bordered by Lake Superior to the south and west, and Stroudsburg Township to the north. The first European settlers in what would become Albert Lea arrived in 1854 from Norway with their families following a fur trading trip to Canada that year led by Captain Olaf Dalrymple Laurent (). After some initial difficulties they were able to establish an agriculture colony on what would become North Dakota's eastern border with Manitoba and named it "Albert Lea". In 1865, missionary John Sorenson started another farming colony there called "Hennepin", but both settlements failed within a few years due to drought and other problems including clashes over boundary changes with surrounding farms. In 1872, Norwegian lumberman Peder Olsen founded his own sawmill at present day Albert Lea after purchasing land east of Hennepin for that purpose near present day Wrightwood Boulevard/Lake Street /Old Wabasha Avenue. By 1875 Olson had erected two churches – one dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes (1872) and another dedicated to Saint Ambrose (1875). That same year local resident John Nunn began construction on what would become Nunn Elementary School northwest of town off Old Wabasha Avenue/Century Road #2A (now Wrightwood Boulevard). In 1876 when New Ulm Methodist Church was built adjacent to Nunn Elementary School, white Baptists organized their first congregation there too - this congregation name still remains today as Stroudsburg United Methodist Church (). The first post office in Albert Lea was established in 1877 with Ayr Jonson as its first clerk; it served briefly until moved back inside Nunn Elementary School during renovations done around that time In 1886 local businessman Julius Meyer set up his cattle ranch southeast of town along Present Day Wrightwood Boulevard/Lake Street/. From then until he died in 1916 various types businesses were established here including grocery store (.1920), restaurant (.1921), zinc smelter (.1925), beer brewery (& 1925) and automotive parts factory (& 1930). In 1905 local physician Drs Ernest Beyers & Oscar Friese opened Beyers Pharmacy downtown which continued into the 21st century . Many residents from nearby Minneapolis-St Paul chose not to move away during the cash crunch associated with World War II while others left for military service or rural housing opportunities outside their home towns . Many people who stayed behind raised families and currently live in homes dating back to those early days before things changed dramatically when war came knocking . Despite these challenges many people continue living here today thanks largely to support services available such as social services , health care , education , economic opportunity & infrastructure renewal programs like grants & loans
