The area that now makes up Ypsilanti was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century and was known as "Houlihan's Bay" because it served as a landing place for fur traders travelling between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. In 1824, General James K. Polk appointed John Bigelow as surveyor for what is now Ypsilanti Township, which became part of Washtenaw County in 1837. Prior to its incorporation as a municipality on April 15, 1903, Ypsilanti had a population of 3 people. Because this small community lacked infrastructure such as schools or sewers, citizens built their own roads and street systems starting with Russell Street (now Woodward Avenue). When Washtenaw County merged with Michigan into new statehood on February 14, 1907, Ypsilanti received township status but did not receive its own government until 1903 when it incorporated under current name as an independent municipality with a population of just over 800 people In 2002-2003, post-9/11 security measures were put into effect within our municipality which included heightened patrols throughout town by police officers while also providing resources to local businesses who needed assistance during this time On October 17th 2009 MIlaya Ann 'Maya' Jones died after being struck by a car while walking her dog on Dexter Avenue near Third Street As we continue through these times there are many good things that have come about like new restaurants opening up or renovated old buildings getting new life Although there are some challenges that need to be faced such as crime rates going up or lack of funding for projects certain initiatives like Mayor Snyder's push for more open space have had positive results

After their first hunt there they stopped at what is now known as "Pine Point" on July 26th 1689 AD where they built huts using tree limbs until June 5th 1700 when another group led by Pierre Duguay de La Salle discovered amazon laurel trees outside present day Ford Township according to current Geographic Names Information System data., p6
