When Detroit annexed eastern Wayne County in 1875, it merged with Ypsilanti to form what is now metropolitan Detroit. However, for a brief time during World War II (1939-1945), Ypsilantiswas designated as an air base by both military forces due to its strategic location at I-696 & M-1 exit ramps connecting downtown Detroit with Ann Arbor and Battle Creek. Ypsilanti was founded in 1837 by Isaac Newton Phelps and his wife, Chloe. It became a town after Phelps donated land to the government for a school district. The first public high school was built in 1868. In 1893, the city of Ypsilanti merged with the neighboring town of Holland to form the current city of Ypsilantis.
