Ypsilanti (pronounced Y-sei-lanti) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat for Washtenaw County. The population was about 59,645 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth most populous city in Michigan after Detroit, Flint, and Lansing. The first permanent European settler in what is now Ypsilanti was Nicholas Wright from Massachusetts on July 4, 1790 while he was exploring the area with his brother John. They named their new land Township of Detroit after British Prime Minister Joseph Banks who had visited America just two years earlier on June 15th 1807 during his Voyage of Discovery which explored much of Canada and Parts of South America including Tierra del Fuego which he sighted on July 5th 1807. During World War II Ypsilanti was home to Naval Weapons Station Grand Haven which produced many warships that participated in World War II including USS "Albatross" (CVE-64), USS "Atom" (BB-63), USS "Plymouth" (AGI-1), USS "Michigan" (BB-59), USS "Wasp" (CVN‑65) and USS "Vincennes" (CVN‑7). The battleship USS Missouri also took up residence there between 1945 and 1946 as part of Operation Crossroads during World War II before being decommissioned back at commissioning yards in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where she continued to serve until 1998 when she joined the US Navy Reserve Fleet at Olympia Washington as an floating training facility until her sinking by fire in 2005. In 1951 Ypsilanti became home to Eastern Michigan University which merged with Western Michigan University to form Midwestern State University which then merged with Western Michigan University again to become Wayne State University in 1970.
