Gun targets have been a part of Ypsilanti's history for as long as there have been guns. The city was founded in 1795 and has been home to many businesses, including a gunsmithing shop and a rifle range. Ypsilanti residents have used guns to shoot at targets since the early 1800s. In 1922, Ypsilanti passed its first ordinance regulating handguns with tighter regulations than those currently present in other municipalities across Michigan. These new regulations were designed to reduce crimes committed with firearms and protect citizens from injuries during shooting matches or tournaments. The Ypsilanti gun range was opened in 1912. The first target rifle was fired at the range by Captain Charles Hickey. In 1916, Captain Samuel Holt set up a pistol and revolver shooting gallery on the east side of the college campus. It remains one of the most popular handgun ranges in Michigan today. In 1968, Ypsilanti's civic membership voted to annex part of University Heights, creating a new community within town limits that included much more than just a gun range. Ypsilanti, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 39,913 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit and the largest in Washtenaw County. Ypsilanti is also home to Western University, one of the top universities in North America. The area that now makes up Ypsilanti was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Washtenaw County on land that had been used for hunting or fishing by their predecessors for centuries before European settlement began about 1675. In 1807, when Michigans first permanent white settlers arrived, they decided to name their new town "Ypsilanti" after a small village near Niagara Falls that they had seen while journeying through Canada. Ypsilanti became a stop on stagecoach routes between Detroit and other major cities during the 19th century; it remained an important transportation hub until World War II when advancements in air travel made it unnecessary for Stagecoach traffic to flow through Flint and other nearby towns. Michigans first university was established at Ypsilanti as Western University on October 12, 1894 (the same day as Boston College). The school closed its doors permanently in 1926 due to financial difficulties; however, it reopened under new management several years later with help from local boosters including John Dowsett Fenton and his wife Sarah Thomson Fenton who donated $5 million towards building programs and constructing classrooms and athletic fields across eight buildings on five acres (2 hectares) southwest of downtown Ypsilantis original site. The campus grew rapidly during this time with enrollment increasing from 20 students enrolled at its inception to 100 by 1905; but despite these successes, WU faced numerous financial challenges which led to its closure again for good in 1925 just two years after its rebirth as part of Michigans efforts to modernize education within reach of all citizens regardless of class or wealth status quo antecedent thereto In 1937–38 WU founded State Normal School which offered high school graduation courses leading up to college entrance examinations throughout Wayne County; this institution remains one of only two such schools remaining today functioning independently outside metropolitan Detroit limits In 1951 WU merged with Huron Valley Teachers' Union (HVTU) - one of many teacher unions nationally then - forming Wayne State Teachers' Union (WSTU).
