The area that now makes up Ypsilanti was populated by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans for centuries before Europeans arrived. In 1812, General James K. Polk established Fort Wayne as a military base on land now part of Ypsilanti Township. The town grew rapidly during its early years as Methodists built churches and farmers produced crops such as apples and potatoes near what is now Saginaw Street and Dexter Avenue. A steamboat landing on the River Rouge served as an important transportation artery for goods from downtown Ypsilanti to rural areas around the county seat until it was replaced by a highway in 1926. In 1837, Henry DeWitt Clinton founded Clintonville, which became one of America's first towns when he platted it on land that later became Washtenaw County. In 1848, John Fenton laid out what would become Dearborn Heights while serving as secretary of state under Ulysses S Grant. By 1870, Dearborn Heights had grown into one of Detroit's most populous neighborhoods and was home to two large factories – American Can Company (now Akal Systems) and Phelps Dodge – as well as numerous small businesses catering to southern Michiganders working their way northward during the Great Migration (1870-1920). During World War II, much of Ypsilanti were occupied by Army Air Forces training bases used by fighter pilots from Grand Rapids; nearby Manton Airport played host to Royal Air Force operations from 1943 through 1945*. After the war ended, many residents moved back into their homes while new arrivals began settling near downtown including several thousand refugees who came ashore with Franklin D Roosevelt when he visited Detroit in late 1944 *. In 1827, when Snyder was elected governor, he ordered all or part of five townships be ceded to him for his county seat and named it Ypsilanti after John Nesbit's estate near Ipswich, England (now East Midlands). The new town was platted in 1829 and became a cornerstone of American settlement westward across the Great Lakes region. In 1836, three years after Snyder's death at age 58 during a hunting trip to open up land eastof Lake Superior for farming purposes, James Kneeland purchased 3 Rancho de las Pulgas (later Grosse Pointe Farms) parcels containing 352 acres (156 hectares) north-northwest of present-day Ypsilanti; these properties formed the nucleus around which future development occurred within our limits. Kneeland sold his interest in this land property to George Stephenson for $5 per acre; Stephenson donated 4 miles (6 kilometers) sectional road leading from his farmstead at Grosse Pointe Farms northwest to downtown Ypsi
