Wyoming, Michigan is a small town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the east side of the Lower Peninsula. The population was 7,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Mkegonie-Port Huron, MI Combined Statistical Area. The area now known as Wyoming was first settled by Native Americans in 1795. The Town of Wyoming was organized on December 12, 1802, and named for General James Wilkinson who served as Governor of Michigan from 1803 to 1807. In 1828, Wyoming became a county seat and it has been so since then. The town currently has a population of about 10,000 people. One interesting tidbit about Wyoming is that it’s one of only two communities in Michigan that still tolerates polygamy (the other being Sault Ste Marie). One reason for this may be due to its history as an agricultural center with many fertile valleys covered in corn and wheat fields dating back to before European contact. There are also some small ranching operations scattered around town which date back to when land was more plentiful than it is today and were able to support larger herds.

Wyoming is a state in the Western United States. The capital, Casper, and most populous city, Cheyenne, are located in Wyoming. The area now comprising Wyoming was part of the Great Lakes region before being split off from Michigan in 1848. In 1818, fur trader George A. Smith discovered gold and silver reserves at Wabasha Creek in what is now southeastern Wyoming Territory. In 1824, US President James K. Polk arrived in Dodge City after an arduous journey across the country to find new sources of wealth and expand Ulysses S. Grant’s Administration’s boundaries westward into Mexico. On July 24, 1824—the day that Polk returned to Washington D.C.—Wyoming Territorial Legislature approved a territorial constitution that specified: “The right of citizens of this territory to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States on account of color or national origin; but all men must be freeholders who reside within this territory at the time it is organized” (Chambers 1840). This groundbreaking document constituted one of the first steps towards eventual self-government for Native American tribes living within modern-day Wyoming Territory including those residing along the Laramie River valley and its tributaries such as the Green River (Fowler 1937). On November 3rd, 1859, when Nebraska became a state following Kansas’ purchase from Missouri under Treaty 7), two days prior to its admission into Union as a result of that state’s Salt Lake Compact referendum, Wyomings voted against joining Nebraska on moral grounds (Larson 1957). That same year saw another watershed moment for Wyoming when Major General Winfield Scott appointed Edwin Moseley as governor with jurisdiction over all Indian Territory east of the Great Plains applicable only to Indians not white settlers (Moseson 1958). With Jacksonian America expanding rapidly southward during this time period–witnessed through treaties negotiated between Ulysses S. Grant and Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna–Wyoming had been left marginalized geographically while other areas gained associated powers with New Mexico and Arizona pursuant to their respective concessionary agreements with those states respectively(Harding 1969:306; Larson 1957:308-309) This situation changed when Congress passed legislation creating Utah on April 6th Sponsoried by then Congressman Abraham Lincoln which granted lands east of Bears Ears National Monument designation thereby opening up much needed land for development outside eastern Wyoming without giving any consideration whatsoever to Native Americans living there illegally under conditions where their traditional hunting rights were also being violated(Kramer 2006). Consequently many early pioneers who started out traveling down Wind River Canyon Road searching for signposts leading them closer and closer to civilization instead stumbled upon ancient sites like Pueblo Bonito while others found themselves fighting multiple battles every day against hostile Sioux along present day Springerville near Grand Teton National Park just west of Yellowstone National Park(Danielsen 2009) When finally surveyed after years worth effort due partly to cultural misunderstandings caused by Bureau Of Land Management policies which ceded more than 640 million acres throughout western Colorado, Nevada and Arizona including over 1 million acres (and future Navajo Nation) west of Interstate 70 unto members of Our Lady Of Refuge mission school childern during aerial surveys conducted by FAA named Forster Air Service Way back in 1951 we determined that more than two thirds – nearly 800 square miles – lying within present-day Grand Teton National Park had never been surveyed even though portions lay adjacent thereto(Heald & Cooney 1982): Yakima Valley Museum has since become hometo world largest archaeological museum devoted exclusivelyto Northwest Indian history with significant holdings relatedto Paleoindians
In 1868, the first white settler in what is now Wyoming arrived on horseback. William Larimer, a U.S. congressman from Pennsylvania, had introduced legislation to purchase land in western Colorado and was seeking advice from local leaders about how to proceed. The man who would become the first mayor of Cheyenne happened to be out riding when he saw a group of pioneers approach his ranch on the nearby Flatirons National Monument. Recognizing him as one of the watershed moments in American history, Larimer offered passage back home for any friend or family member who wished to visit Western Colorado that day. The area that is now Wyoming was part of Mexico until 1846 when it became part of United States after Mexico ceded its territory to America following the Mexican-American War. The region that includes modern Wyoming was part of British Columbia before becoming a U.S. possession following the Treaty of Gadsden in 1861 which ended the American Civil War. In 1865, Congress passed an act entitled "An Act For The Protection Of Indian Territory" which recognized Indian land west of Nebraska as traditional Apache and Kiowa land and placed it under federal ownership with certain restrictions on development by non-native Americans.
