Wyoming is a state in the Western United States. It borders Oregon to the south, Colorado to the east, and Nebraska to the north. The Wyoming Valley was once one of the most fertile agricultural regions in North America. Today, much of this land is used for ranching and mining. The history of Wyoming dates back to 17 Bridger Mountains National Monument when it was created on July 15, 1908. At that time, only 24 square miles (71 square kilometers) were included in what is now Wyoming. The first Europeans to explore this area were Mexican traders and trappers who traveled along the Platte River in search of fur bearing animals. In 1859, gold was discovered at Gold Rush City on Green River near present-day Cheyenne Rapids. This led to a rush by settlers into what is now Wyoming from all over America in search of this new resource. By 1870, there had been more than 100 settlements established within present-day Wyoming Territory including Laramie, Casper, Gilpin Springs and Alder Creek Settlement just west of present day Sheridan County seat of Great Falls (now Cheyenne). In 1887–88 President Grover Cleveland designated 14 townships within present-day Sheridan County as part of an effort called “Pioneering Western Townships” program which aimed to promote settlement by offering inducements such as free land or improved transportation facilities within these townships. The program failed due to lack of interest from individual citizens while also causing tension between local Indians and white settlers because many Indian treaty lands were lost in the process..
