In 1854, a group of men from Wyandotte, Michigan, founded the American Optics Company. The company became one of the leading manufacturers and sellers of optical telescopes. Over the years, American Optics has produced some of the world's most popular scopes, including both refractors and reflectors. In 1976, American Optics merged with Brown & Williamson to form Brown & Williamson/American Optics Inc.

Wyandotte is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Wyandotte County. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 69,391. The city was named after General Anthony Wayne, who was an American general during the War of 1812 and later served as governor of Michigan. The first settler in what is now Wyandotte County was George Washington Kapp in 1811. The town site was chosen because it lay on "the best land" for farming in that area, according to pioneer John Sievers. Kapp's family began growing corn, wheat and other crops thereabouts about 1830-1835; their home at present-day West Side Road became known as the Kapps' Farmstead until 1796 when they sold it to Daniel Dickson for $750 cash. In 1836, James Holmwood purchased from the Kapps their farmstead north of downtown Wyandotte; its current location is near Third Street and North Meridian Avenue east of Lansing Airport (now I-264). The first post office at Wyandotte was established on November 1, 1837 by Wm. H.(Henderson) Phelps with Pemberton as his town mailing address; Henderson moved to Lansing in 1840 but remained postal clientele here until his death in 1865. In 1839-1840 Jacob Hecker built a log cabin near where Third Street meets North Meridian Avenue just south of Lansing airport (now I-264) – this structure still stands today across from Northwest Topographical Map Company headquarters on East Main Street adjacent to State University Spartans football practice fields

In 1835, Wyandotte became one of the first townships in Michigan to be exempted from paying state taxes for five years due to its importance as a transportation hub for goods entering and leaving the state. In 1856, Wyandotte incorporated as a village under the name of Newtonia. The post office remained open until it was closed in 1906. For most of its existence, Newtonia functioned more like an "inner city" than an actual town; residents were essentially resident aliens who resided within their own municipality while seeking to avoid paying taxes or engaging in political activity outside of their home city limits. However, after World War IIuu brought about increased development downtown and new suburban subdivisions began popping up around Newtonia, Village status eventually reverted back to that of an inner city community again beginning around 1990-2001
