In 1840, General George Washington's army passed through Wyandotte on their way to Detroit; his force stopped for dinner at the Hotel de la Ville and then continued its journey without incident. In 1847, John Fenton bought 2,500 acres (1 km2) along the riverbank from Nicholas Scherrer for $5 per acre ($10 million in 2008 dollars). This location would become known as Wyandotte County or "The New Purchase". Fenton named his holdings "Fenton Township" after himself and gave it to his son-in-law Samuel Morse (a pioneer telegraph operator). Morse donated land to build a townsite on what is now Main Street in 1830. On May 6, 1834, surveyor Jno Capp made an official plat of the village site which included 5 blocks square with a dirt road running north/south bisecting each block A post office called Honeoye was established in 1833 by order of Govt. Leman Kincaid; it was discontinued in 1840 because no mail arrived there during that time period! The first settler(s) were James Dickey and Ebenezer Parsons who came from Canada in 1835; they built a log cabin near present day Huron Road across from Saginaw Bayou on Mound Street near what is now Dearborn Avenue

Wyandotte was a small town in southeastern Michigan, United States until it was annexed by Detroit in 1837. The name Wyandotte comes from the Ottawa word yawanda meaning "big place." The first settler in what is now Wyandotte County were two brothers, John and Jonathan Bigelow. In 1794, they founded the village of Bigelow's Corners on the east side of the Muskegon River. In 1806, Wyandotte became a part of Michigan Territory. By 1827, it had a population of about 300 people and was considered a stop on the Underground Railroad. On July 3, 1837, Detroit made Wyandotte an incorporated city with its own police force and sewer system. It also granted land to the mayor and council for their use as they saw fit. The City of Wyandotte continued to exist until it merged with Detroit in 1948 to form Wayne County
