Wyandotte is a town in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,622 at the 2010 census. The first white people to settle in Wyandotte were fur traders working for the Hudson's Bay Company. They started a post office in 1827 and erected a log cabin on the edge of what is now town. By 1830, there were ten settlers living in Wyandotte. In 1835, Wyandotte became part of Lansing Township. In 1848, Wyandotte was granted township status and land around the current downtown core was donated for development including mills and churches. The town plat was filed on November 5th of that year and construction began on the first millrace (now called Washington Street) within two years. The second millrace (now called Elm Street) opened in 1850 and became one of the most important water supplies for the community until it closed in 1962 due to overuse. In 1863, residents voted to form a new township with their own government which would continue to operate under Lansing Township control even after Wyandotte joined as an independent municipality The original courthouse stands today inside what is now Town Hall building located on Main Street between Harris Road and Wabash Avenue while other early buildings included a schoolhouse on State Street near present day Elmwood Elementary School; jail; store; blacksmith shop; farmstead; homeopathic dispensary; Presbyterian church which served as meeting hall until 1865 when it burned down during an API storm
