Wyandotte is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the east side of the Upper Peninsula. It was founded in 1834 by Andrew Wyandotte and his family, who were among the first white settlers in what is now Michigan. The city has a population of over 30,000 people today, making it one of the largest in Michigan. The town was named after General Wayne's expedition that discovered the area in 1812 while exploring what is now Canada. Wyandotte is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wyandotte County. The population was 25,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. In 1813, Wyandotte County was created from part of Lapeer County and it became a part of Michigan in 1836. The first white person to live in what is now Wyandotte Township was James Haggerty on December 7, 1800, when he came overland from Kentucky with his family. He built a cabin on land that still stands near present-day Wyoming Boulevard and St Clair Avenue East. Haggerty's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Wyandotte Township and later Wyandotte County. In 1821, John Saginaw born in Ottawa County, Upper Canada moved westward along the lower Great Lakes to Detroit where he met General Wm Tilton who offered him land in section 10 east of Detroit (now within Wyandotte Township). Saginaw began settling here and named his settlement "Wyandotte". By 1830, most of this area had been organized into individual townships: Washtenaw (1824), Gratiot (1827), Oakland (1829), Newaygo (1830), Macomb (1831), Wayne (1834) and Washtenaw Heights (circa 1840). In 1837, after Lansing was founded as the territorial capital by United States President Andrew Jackson, many residents living in southern Wayne Territory fled to find safety within Lansingwhen Jackson ordered all Native Americans removed from their homes east of Grand Rapids without cause or trial–an event known as “The Indian Removal Act” or The Trail Of Tears. Many residents who had lived there for generations were forced out onto reservations such as Oneida Chief Joseph Brant’s Reserve northwest of Marquette because their lands lay within the boundaries chartered for Lansing by Jackson et al., including much present-day WyANDOTTE COUNTY! An estimated 100 families were driven away during this time which deeply hurt many people who had invested so much hope and effort into making their home here! After years of wrangling with government officials over where they should go, some 25 families finally received permanent residency status at Kippenhaver Park outside Lansing in 1850 after successfully appealing to then-President Millard Fillmore; however these new residents did not enjoy equal rights with other citizens due to unique historic circumstances surrounding their displacement/reparation situation! As an aside: Oneida Nation also lost nearly 60% its population due to natural causes between 1830-1850; yet despite this significant loss our ancestors never forgot us!
