The population of Woodhaven peaked at 2,868 in 1930, but has declined since then; as of 2010, it had 1,977 residents. The main industry in Woodhaven until the 1970s was lumberjacking; today the town is mostly known for its fishing and boating activities. The town began to form schools in 1828 and first used public funds to purchase land from local farmers for school purposes; when that proved unsuccessful, the townsite erected its own schoolhouse in 1830. The townsite also purchased a sawmill from David Machin in 1840 and built a millrace around it which still flows today (the current Mill Creek Bridge crosses over it). In 1850, Woodhaven created its own post office with ZIP code 49834; this service continued until 1978 when it merged into neighboring Lansing's postal service district. In 1928, Woodhaven opened its first grocery store - one of only two such stores operating at that time within Township boundaries - and has since been an important retail supplier for the community. On July 1, 1837, the town of Woodhaven was organized. It was located in Wayne County, Michigan. The town was named after General James A. Wood who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Michigan. The first settler in Woodhaven was Nicholas Pappas who arrived on July 10th, 1837. The first store in town opened on November 15th, 1837 by Wm. Ladd and Mary Hesseltine with $5 worth of goods. In 1840, David Soderquist bought land and built a cabin which served as the first schoolhouse in town. In 1847, John Fenton purchased land near present day Woodward Avenue and established a blacksmith shop called Fenton's Forge which still stands today at 4397 Woodward Ave NW. In 1850, Isaac Wheeler founded the Wheelwright lace factory on what is now Elm Street east of Main Street in Woodhaven which produced lace for hats and other products until it closed around 1965 when its production moved to Flint Hills outside of Detroit). In 1858, Abraham Levy arrived from Canada with his family to found the Levy Home Creamery on North Main Street just west of where Present Day Elm Street meets Woodward Avenue NW today (the Levy Home Creamery still stands today). In 1865, James Ewing established a bakery on East Main Street north of present day Elm Streets NE & SE corner near I-94 (Ewing's Bakery still stands today) which became one of the most popular grocery stores in town with its namesake bread items such as rolls, pies & pastries as well as general merchandise including groceries etc.).
