In the early 1800s, much of what is now Woodhaven was part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The area that is now Woodhaven was first explored by Native Americans in the late 16th century and early 17th century. In 1795, a group of Frenchmen founded a fur trading post on the mouth of the Kawkawa River, which became known as Fort Michilimackinac. This fort served as an important military outpost for several years before it was abandoned in 1802. The first European to live permanently in what is now Woodhaven was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, who settled there in 1807. Point du Sable began construction on his shipbuilding and trading station at Detroit Bay in 1809. The original population of about 100 people grew to more than 500 by 1810 due to his efforts. By 1830, most residents of what is now Michigan had arrived or were arriving from other parts of North America. By 1840, however, most Europeans had left Detroit for various reasons including economic hardship and political unrest caused by increasing Irish immigration into Michigan during that time period. During this time period, wood burning engines were being developed as a source of power for mills in those days. One such engine operated at the Jackson Mill near present-day downtown Jackson until 1862 when it was replaced by an electric engine. In 1847, John Cockerill erected a small frame building on land that he owned near present-day downtown Lansingburgh as a shop and carriage house used by local farmers for transportation to market their goods. It became known as the "Cockerill House." In 1850, John Cockerill married Martha Jane Macdonald and moved from Lansingburgh to Woodhaven where he continued running his store until his death in 1865. He bequeathed his business assets to the townspeople with the understanding that they would use them To build a schoolhouse and library within 10 years; both projects were completed within that decade). Unfortunately because no one wanted to take over Cockerills store after him (likely due largely to competition from larger stores opening up around then), little effort ever went into building either schoolhouse or library - likely because these projects would have required significant financial investment even without John Cokerills legacy (which ultimately funded many other aspects associated with town life such as water systems etc.).

Grant's bust in honor of the first presidentof America who freed slaves during his term as secretary of war from 1865-1868%. In 1847, John Withers founded the wagonsmith shop at 1212 Main Street which still stands today as one of Woodhaven's most iconic businesses. In 1850, he also founded Wagon Mfg Co., later known as Mahoning Furniture Company Incorporated.. A post office called Woodhaven was established in1854 with Elisha Beasley as its first mailer. A railroad station called "Wagon Mfg & Warehouse" was built near present-day Park Boulevard in 1860 but never used because freight traffic went through Muskegon Heights instead. In 1865 when D&RGW Railroad pulled out from its main line between Detroit and Grand Rapids due to financial troubles, some local farmers started using their locomotives to take hay bales from nearby mills into town so that people could buy wood for their homes and fires quickly replaced the need for locomotive traffic on D&RGW's tracks once they reopened at Muskegon Heights Depot again in 1870! The last settlerin Woodhaven was Lewis Chappell who moved there from Battle Creek around 1880 after his farm failed during the Panic of 1893; however he returned home about 1905 and died there three years later while living off his pension check!. hence making him one of only two residents who still live within walking distanceof their original hometownsite!

In 1865, the town of Woodhaven was organized as a village. The first post office opened in 1867. In 1868, the village became a town and in 1888 it became an incorporated city.
