The first permanent settler in what is now Woodhaven was Nicholas Sibley, who arrived in 1825 and named it for his home town, Winthrop Harbor on Massachusetts Bay. He sold land to Hugh Ahearn in 1829 and built a mill thereon that produced flour for local markets and also exported raw lumber to other states. In 1840, John Ladd purchased much of Nicholas Sibley's property and renamed it Woodhaven after himself – an act that helped solidify its position as a commercial center for eastern Michigan's Upper Peninsula region. In 1861, when Detroit became a city, woodhove manufacturer Levi Snyder moved to Woodhaven with his family from Battle Creek and opened a wooden sawmillrace called The Big Mill (now known as White Sands). The city also played host to numerous events related to the war such as parades and ball games. After World War II ended, Woodhaven slowly started decline through demographic changes. More people left the city for other areas of Michigan or Illinois; few new residents came back; and crime rates increased.
