The village of Woodhaven is located in Muskegon County, Michigan, about 12 miles south of the city of Detroit. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to the Village of West Bloomfield on the east side of Muskegon River and to East Palestine Township on the west side. Woodhaven was laid out by Nicholas Flinders Petrie in 1837 as a small community near what is now Holland Road and Woodward Avenue. The name "Woodhaven" may have been derived from a French word meaning swamp or marshy area. In 1847, Wm. Landon erected a log cabin here for himself and his family. In 1853, Jno Fenton donated land for a school near present-day Elmira Road and Woodward Avenue; this school operated until it was closed in 1916 because of financial difficulties. In 1865, James Fenton donated land for a hospital which served as both an infirmary and maternity home until it closed in 1957; this hospital also served as the town's first post office from 1865 to 1907. In 1886, Elisha Sibley donated property north of Elmira Road for use as a public square; this square still exists today (named after him) and is used primarily for recreational purposes such as soccer games and concerts. In 1912, Ainslee Howell donated land northeast of Elmira Road for use as an agricultural fairgrounds; these fairgrounds remain extant today ( named after her). A fire destroyed much of downtown Woodhaven on November 17th 1904 while many people were inside The Masonic Temple - one can still see some evidence that stands today including bricks that bear Howe’s number “5” – though most damage has been repaired or replaced since then! During World War II, wooden huts were built by members of the United States Army at nearby Big Rapids Air Base to provide shelter during air raids over Muskegon Heights/Detroit areas

Woodhaven is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 25 miles east of Detroit on the Grand River. The population was 1,827 as of the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Wood and his family from Connecticut with the erection of a tiny log cabin near what is now Gratiot Avenue. The first post office opened in 1839. One reason for the name change to Woodhaven may have been because there were few trees near by to harvest lumber for buildings and other purposes. When Great Lakes shipbuilding began in the early 1800s, many workers lived and worked at various sites along the Rouge River which connected Lake Huron to Superior (now Michigan). In 1836, Nicholas Wood decided to move his family from Hartford, Conn., so they could live closer to work on one of these shipsyards. His wife Mary (née Smith) and their two children accompanied him as he started outloading goods onto vessels at Saginaw Harbor (later known as Mackinac Island). The first home they built was on land donated by Major George Washington Morrison who also served as president of Saginaw County during that time- it became known as "Washington Township". After some growth and some additional purchases, they had six homes by 1840 when their company bought an adjacent lot for $4 per acre ($100 per square mile). In 1849, Nicholas' brother John moved from New York City with his pregnant wife and two young sons to start another woodworking company called Morris & Brown in nearby Flint after purchasing a large piece of forest land west of Saginaw Bayou where they erected several sawmills including one that still stands today - proof that even after more than 200 years lumbering activity has continued at Woodhaven! By 1860 local residents had erected over 100 houses; businesses included three banks: First National Bank (1860), United States Savings Bank (1862), and Grosse Pointe Mutual Insurance Company (1865-68) which later merged into JBS Financial Corporation; five churches including St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church (1859), First Protestant Episcopal Church (1860), Our Lady Of Good Counsel Greek Orthodox Church(1911), and Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Parish(1912); four schools viz.: Clinton School District No 2 only open until 1863 due to lack of money but soon reopened underprivileged children being admitted free; Woodward Academy serving grades 8-12 1860-1963 was closed when Woodward Intermediate School building burned down; John Dorney High School 1871-1973 serving grades 9-12 replaced by current high school building #2 1925-. . A grocery store got started circa 1865 named Mrs.'s Store although no such business exists today - this may be why it is not listed on local historical maps! Although very small compared to larger villages like Detroit or Ottawa County seat Sandusky Heights, Woodhaven did manage several noteworthy events through its history including becoming an incorporated municipality in 1850 (!); hosting a fair every year starting in 1861; becoming part of Mackinac County effective July 1 1870 thru November 3 1870 inclusive when all towns within county become county seats subject to same election laws & boundaries etc.; hosting numerous livestock shows each fall throughout its history up until World War II while also featuring agricultural exhibits during summertime; finally being annexed by Detroit following its merger with Grand Rapids on December 15 1923 despite initially opposing annexation due to stronger feelings towards that city among many residents!
The city of Woodhaven was founded in 1887 by Judge Augustus F. Woodward, who donated the land for the settlement. The first building in the city was a Methodist church, which served as its meeting place until 1907. In that year, the town became a village and soon had a library, post office, and other small businesses. In 1928, Woodhaven annexed the neighboring community of Eastwood. The annexation was due to disagreements over water rights and property lines between these two communities. On July 1, 1932, Woodhaven became an official municipality with full voting power under Michigan law. It remained an unincorporated community until it joined the City of Detroit in 1949 when all residents were given municipal status within the newly formed city limits.
