The town of Woodhaven, Michigan, was founded in 1868 by the brothers Samuel and Isaac G. Harper. The town was named after a forest near their farmstead. The Harpers donated land to the town for development andrewsville township was organized in 1870, with the first post office located at the junction of Highways 9 and 10. In 1914, when Grand Rapids became an incorporated city, Woodhaven lost its status as a village and became part of the new city. However, it reverted to its original name in 1980 when all other villages in Washtenaw County were dissolved into cities or townships. In 2000, Woodhaven won a $10 million grant from the state government to help it improve public transportation system within its borders. Today, Woodhaven is a small but thriving community with approximately 300 residents that includes several businesses including two banks and four grocery stores along with three primary schools (two high school districts), one daycare center/preschool, one skating rink/ice rink/bandanna park and four churches. The commercial district has more than 20 restaurants and bars as well as several large retailers such as Lowe's Home Improvement Center on Huron Street and Sears Roebuck & Co.'s store on First Avenue South. Woodhaven is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 535 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a grant from the State of Michigan to be built on land that would later become Woodhaven Township. The first settlers arrived in 1837 and platted the town on October 4, 1839. In 1861, Woodhaven became part of Muskegon County and was named for Colonel James WOODHAN who had been instrumental in organizing efforts to get the county formed. In 1876, Woodhaven was merged with other towns in Muskegon County to form what is now known as Midland Township. The community experienced growth during World War II when many firms relocated to the area due to wartime shortages of materials. However, after the war ended, little continued to happen in Woodhaven until it experienced another growth spurt during the late 1990s when several businesses opened up and started using Village Square as their downtown location. As of 2010, there are only a few remaining businesses open within what once were three-quarters of a million people located within boundaries that encompass most everything northeast ofGrand Rapids: woodhaven township; grangesville; woodbridge Heights; and Havenwood Park. One popular annual event held by residents is "Christmas Market" which takes place throughout December at various locations around village square including convenience store/grocery stores along US-27 just south of village square entrance (near intersection with Saginaw Street), pizza places along I-94 northbound exit #209 near interchange with M-2Exit 93 (I-94 splits into two lanes concurrent here), Sheetz candy store across from Post Office on Saginaw Street east side between Grangesville Road and White Earth Rd., pet food stores along I-96 northbound exit #5 near interchange with US Highway 10 (US 9 runs through this area)
The first white settlers in the area were George and Martha White, who arrived in 1807. They founded a cabin on the banks of the river at what is now Woodhaven. The town was named after them. In 1814, another group of pioneers, led by Daniel Dees, established a mill on the river. The town grew slowly until it had a population of about 100 people in 1847. It then experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location between Detroit and Lansing and because of its key role in transportation. By 1865, Woodhaven had a population of 575 people. It became an incorporated municipality in 1872. Woodhaven's unique architecture and infrastructure made it an important center for commerce and government during its early years.
