The town of Woodhaven, Michigan is located in the lower Peninsula of Michigan on the east side of the Upper Peninsula. It is bordered by Sheboygan County to the north, Grand Rapids County to the east, and Muskegon County to the south. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. The history of Woodhaven goes back to 1837 when a group of men from New England purchased a tract of land in what is now Woodhaven Township. The new settlement was named after John Wood (1776-1834), an early settler in that area. In 1852, lumber merchants Isaac Cook and Augustus Prentice bought additional land in what is now part of Woodhaven Township and built their mills there. The first school in town was built in 1857. The first post office opened in 1858. By 1860, there were sixteen residents living in town and six businesses had been founded including two hotelkeepers, one storekeeper, three farmers, one doctor, one milliner/dentist and one cooperator guild with sixty members total. By 1870 there were over fifty residents living in town and twenty-six businesses had been established including four hotels/motels; two grocery stores; two newspapers; four breweries; five tobacconists/cigar stores; thirty-six banks account with $1 million worth of assets reported; eleven churches served as meeting places for religious services weekly during 1870-1910 while also offering educational opportunities such as Sunday schools and evening classes for children In 1916 local resident George Ahern opened his own general store which became known as Ahern's Supermarket until its closure by 1984 following township regulations limiting supermarkets to retail customers only In 1952 another local resident Harry Kapp opened his own convenience store which became known as Kapp's Convenience Store until its closure by 1984 following township regulations limiting convenience stores to retail customers only In 1957 a post office called Oneidaopened which continues service today On September 15th 1925 a small fire started nears where Main Street ends form Centre Road nears residences killing three people who resided there including Mrs Gertrude Ellerbe who lived across from where the fire started Presbyterian Church also burned down that year

The town was founded in 1853 by James WOODHaven and his family. It became a city in 1907, but declined in population and status until it regained its city status in 1973. In 1974, Woodhaven joined the City of Detroit as an enclave within that city's limits. The two cities have been separate since 1997 when they were amalgamated into one municipality under the name "Detroit." Woodhaven is named for James WOODHaven, who platted the town site on November 17, 1853. At first called Clay Township No 1 (now part of Warren), Woodhaven was laid out on May 14, 1854 by George LANCASTER with investors from Grand Rapids and other townships near Flint to serve as a hub for trade with what was then Canada's Upper Great Lakes region. By 1860, WOODHaven had built a gristmill at what is now known as Main Street and started trading goods with traders along what is now I-75 south to Detroit; lumber being particularly important among early settlers because trees could not be grown in much of central Michigan at that time due to severe weather conditions caused by bad soil and frozen ground freezes during winter months In 1862 WOODHaven donated land to build a new city hall which would become home to both the township court house and local school district offices; this event also marked the beginning of municipal government for Woodhaven On July 3rd 1870 voters approved incorporation as a village under control of the Board of Education; this act placed Woodward County within newly formed Wayne County The Village charter granted powers to create roads, post office, fire brigade/police department etc., making it one of only two villages in Wayne County created without voter approval . On December 6th 1871 Village trustees adopted an ordinance providing for head Start (a daycare) and night schools serving pre-school through grade 12 students using funds raised from assessments levied on all properties within boundaries
