One such entrepreneur was Julius Rosenwald who also founded Sears Roebuck & Co., one of America's most famous retail companies. Not only did he establish himself here but he also helped contribute significantly toWOODHaven's growth as an important center for commerce and culture in late 19th century Detroit

The first settler in what is now Woodhaven Township was John Lawless, who arrived on June 12, 1812. The town was organized on November 3, 1815 by a group of farmers and businessmen. It became the capital of the township on January 1, 1816. The first school in the township was built in 1819. The first store opened in 1825.
