Although many residents chose not to move away from their homes during this time period – some chose instead to stay behind – many families did leave for lack of options or because they could not bear living near white settlers who had destroyed their homes . In 1830 , when much of Northwest Michigan became part of Ohio , many choose to remain in Michigan rather than face relocation again (it would take another decade for all northern tribes such as the Potawatomi tribe also relocated). This choice shows how supportiveMichigan's frontier society was at that time; it offered many opportunities for those who wanted them but also gave rise to resentment among later generations who experienced displacement firsthand
In 1868, the town of Woodhaven was organized. The first settler in what is now Woodhaven was John Cook. Cook moved to the town from Lafayette, Indiana in 1848. In 1870, the post office was established in Woodhaven and named after John Cook.
