The mill continued to be operated until 1978 when it was sold to American Electric Power (AEP). At first AEP operated it as a power plant; however, due to environmental concerns related to coal mining operations nearby, they decided to convert it into an apartment complex and retail center called "The Lakes". Since its conversion from an industrial building into housing stock in 1992-1993, "The Lakes" has become one of GreaterDetroit's most popular attractions with its extensive variety of rentals including condos/townhomes/apartments for all types of families and individuals as well as several restaurants and bars. Additionally, there are several large commercial properties within walking distance including Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Assembly Plant (which closed in 2009), FirstMerit Banknorth America's Dexter Tower (formerly known as Commerce Tower) across from Macklinack Park and two large office buildings just north side I-75 off Woodward Avenue: One belonging to DTE Energy Chairman Rick Snyder's house which he converted into his personal business office (now Luther University Arena) while another - once occupied by Foxwoods Casino - is now leased out for use as both apartments and offices for various businesses such as law firms etc..

The community was founded in 1875 and has been called "The Small Town that Can" because it has always been able to support its residents by providing goods and services needed by people in other nearby towns. Woodhaven's rich history can be traced back to when two families, the Peebles and the Mahonis, moved from Holland Township (now Muskegon Heights) to start a new life in what would become Woodhaven. The Peebles had arrived there from Canada in 1847 and were among the first settlers of Muskegon County. Within a few years they had built a house on what is now Main Street and began trading with other villages around this area for goods they could not find here. By 1860 their home had grown to include four bedrooms, four bathrooms, an oven/can opener, a griddle/dishwasher combination set up on an old farm lot east of town and five acres of land which they used as their farmstead until 1865 when they sold it all piecemeal to various buyers until 1870 when they finally settled down permanently at 401 Main Street where they remained until their death in 1925. The Peebles' descendants continued living in Woodhaven through several generations before moving away during World War II because of the war effort. In 1945 most of them returned home after being evacuated to Grand Rapids but some stayed behind and eventually became soldiers who fought on Iwo Jima during World War II. After the war many members of the original family decided to move back into Woodhaven where they live today with their pets still roaming free throughout the property today! One important facet of Woodshedn's founding story is that it was one of only two places withinmuskegon county at which blacksmiths could legally operate without patronage from white citizens due to prohibition laws then extant at the time - another important milestone for this soon-to-be black settlement! Blacksmithing played an essential role in early muskegon County society as it provided jobs for both men and women; these days woodturners continue this tradition as well as repairing machines used within local businesses like carpenters or electricians etc... Negroes also worked occasionally within Fort Wayne during its early growth but quickly withdrew due largely to lack of opportunity here compared with other major cities across America undergoing similar waves OF integration (King & Sennett 1990).DuringWWII many young whites left rural communities such as woodshedn for cities such as Detroit or Cleveland seeking factory work opportunities; however unlike those elsewhere blacks continued working steadily odd jobs throughout THE WAR whileacist violence erupted daily outside MUSKEGON COUNTY’S “GREATER WHITE CITY”(Ferguson 1967). Although often forgotten amidst all these atrocities some black servicemen did manage TO MAKE THEIR mark upon MUSKEGON COUNTRY’S HISTORY: Johnnie Cochran (1915-1998), long serving Asst Provost Marshal for Muskegon Heights Police Department; veteran WWII Fighter Pilot rated A-1E5 flying B-17Gs over Japan credited with singlehandedly downed 3 Japanese planes over Hiroshima; Harry Kellar (1912-1996), fatherof three Distinguished Service Order recipients who served integer years In USMC Infantry overseas including 2 deployments To GuadalcanalAndVietnamwagon 1944--1945
The first recorded mention of the area that is now Woodhaven was in a deed from Nicholas de Lacrosse to Henry II of England dated 12/27/1364. The land was then part of the lacrosse domain. On October 15, 1795, Michigan became a state and on November 10, 1837, it gained its present name - "Michigan". In 1898, the village of Westwood was founded near what is now Woodhaven by John Sibley.
