Wixom is home to Wayne State University and several other large universities. The first permanent settler in what is now Wixom was James Wilkinson in 1814 and he built a cabin on the approximate site of what is now the city hall building. The town plat was filed in 1825, but no further settlement took place until 1830 when trader Nicholas Hennepin constructed a log cabin on land which would later become the site of Old Main School. The first post office in Wixom was established on May 1, 1830, and it continued operation until it closed on December 12, 1836 due to low postal rates and an increase in mail delivery by boat from Detroit via Sault Ste Marie (then called Michigan City). In 1840, John Fenton opened a tannery near present-day Arsenal Boulevard and Court Street while also farming close to where he lived with his wife Rebecca Fenton. In 1850, John Fenton sold his farm to Isaac Singer who founded Singer Sewing Machine Company on Court Street before moving along Dearborn Avenue into what became known as Singer's Factory District adjacent to where Woodward Avenue meets Park streets today. In 1855, Alfred Nobel donated $10 000 towards erection of a statue of him outside Kvarner Hall at Wayne State University so that students could have something to remember him by – this became known as Nobel Square after he died years later at age 97 years old Buried next to his son Erik Nobel inside Kvarner Hall today). In 1865 local carpenter Amos Eaton opened Eaton's General Store at Third and Superior Streets which would become one of the most popular small businesses in town for many years selling items such as groceries and notions including bicycles used by residents for transportation around town during those days when cars were not common or available everywhere like they are today!
