The first shooters in the area of Wixom, Michigan were probably the Indians who hunted and scalped game near the present day city. By 1824, a group of white men had set up a trading post at nearby Mackinac Island. They soon realized that there was potential for hunting deer and other animals in what is now the City of Wixom. One man, George Washington Matthews, set out to find a place to hunt in 1827. He found an opening in the woods next to where he now lives and began hunting deer with his rifle. In 1834, James Hickey opened an inn on Second Street between Griggs Avenue and Main Street which became known as The Gunsmiths Arms Inn. Wixom, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wixom County. The population was 15,658 at the 2010 census. Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the population was 25,684 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Ingham County. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Wixom was George Marsden, who came to land that now includes much of downtown Wixom in 1837 on a grant from President James K. Polk as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The town's name originated with local volunteer firemen who named their engine "Wixom" after a nearby stream (now known as Muskegon River). A post office called Wixom was established in 1853, and remained operational until it closed in 1901. The first store opened in 1854 and prospered for several years under proprietor John Hetherington before closing due to financial difficulties. A new store building was erected on Main Street in 1861 by entrepreneur Elijah Morse, which continued to operate until 1907 when it burned down. In 1870, an act was passed by Congress which designated Ingham County as one of three counties within Michigan specifically for lumbering purposes; this led to growth around the lumber industry and helped spur development around downtown Wixom including new shopping malls and hotels such as Holiday Inn Express and Marriott Marquis Hotel & Casino on Detroit Road between Saginaw Avenue and 6th Street NW. By 1910 there were over 1,000 businesses operating out of downtown Wixom employing over 3300 people making it one of Michigan's most vibrant cities during its prosperous early years thanks largely to organized labor efforts spearheaded by Mayor George Ligonier who also served as president of International Harvester Co., one of many companies active in downtown Wixom during this time period along with other industrialists including J P Morgan & Company founder James Danko Sr., General Motors co-founder William Durant Jr., Weyerhaeuser company president Alfred Sloan etc.). Banks included First National Bank (founded 1865), Peoples Bank (1868), Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance (1870), State Bankruptcy Act Trustee v Great Lakes Lumber Co.(1871), First Associated Chemical Workshops Incorporated(1872) - today’s Moline Plastics Industries Incorporated - Mack Truck Lines Founder/President Al Mackay being among its directors; Huntington Steel Products Corporation (1901) - later purchased by Arconic Corporation; American Can Company (1906) – successor to Armour Rubber & Paper Limited; American Telephone Company USA Incorporation(1927) – predecessor to current AT&T Corporation headquartered here since 1987 through their affiliate Time Warner Cable division located adjacent across I-75 from original old telephone plant site occupied by these two predecessors once both buildings were combined into one structure visible from I-75 just south side off exit I- 75 heading east past current day ExxonMobil refinery complex prior then turning northeast onto US Highway 12 approximately 7 miles south west via short drive east then curves northwest following old alignment original route departing from present location about 5 miles northwest ‘WIXOM CITY Limits’

The first settler in what is now Wixom was Abram Sprague in 1819. The name "Wixom" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where trees grow." A post office called Wixom was established in 1836, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1881, John Pritchard built the first Sawmill on Saginaw River. In 1895 he opened a general store and millinery business here which became known as "Pritchard's". In 1915 WWI veteran Johnnie Langston bought land here to build a duplex housing development that still stands today as Langston Towers Apartments. This project led to Wixom becoming one of the most heavily populated areas in Muskegon County with over 50 businesses opening their doors during World War I. As Wixom grew into an industrial center during the 1920s and 1930s with factories like Mead-Johnson Paper Company and American Can Factory located here along Saginaw River there were several large fires that destroyed many buildings downtown including Pritchard's sawmill fire of 1924 which killed 5 people; this event sparked much public concern about factory safety across America. Also during this time period new freeway projects such as US-131 were constructed through downtown making it easier for employees to get around town while also destroying some ancient buildings like Sprague's house which served as a courthouse back then but no longer remains today due to demolition efforts by county officials since prohibition ended nearly thirty years ago!
