Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the western edge of the City of Detroit metropolitan area. As of 2010, Wixom had a population of 97,567 and is the ninth-largest city in Michigan. The city was founded in 1887 by George Wixom and named after his wife's maiden name, which was then common among Upper Canada pioneers. When Wixom first opened its doors to residents in 1887, it consisted only of a few buildings on North Main Street. However, over time, Wixom grew into one of the most important cities in Southeast Michigan for both economic development and social services. Today, Wixom is home to more than 150 businesses and 1,000 residents with an estimated income range from $44,000 to $118,000 annually. Additionally, Wixom offers many cultural attractions including two museums: the George Washington Carver Museum and State Historic Site (the first museum in Southeast Michigan), as well as several sport venues including the Gaylord Ice Arena and Recreation Center as well as six parks totaling over 20 acres that include BMX tracks/racing facilities/courses for children/adults/etc., along with baseball diamonds/football stadiums/. In 1875, Hosea Bender developed an improved design which allowed for attachment of a crossbar to the barrel of a rifle in order to improve its accuracy. This new type of mounting became known as "mounting device" or simply "mounter." The first commercial mounters were created by George Armstrong and Amos Kendall in 1881. They produced three types of mounts: an open-top mount for rifles with barrels less than 26 inches long, an adjustable top mount for rifles with barrels between 26 and 36 inches long, and a recoil lug mounted above the magazine well for rifles with magazines longer than 36 inches. These mounts were designed to allow improvement in range by increasing the amount of elevation available at different ranges. Mounters continued to be produced into the 1920s but major advances occurred during World War I when improvements were made in artillery technology which led to increased accuracy at long ranges thanks to developments in optics and machine gun ammunition. During World War II there was significant development in firearms technologies leading to further increases in range due to advancements such as smoothbore ammunition and advanced camouflage clothing which permitted soldiers operating at great distances from their units under difficult conditions to engage targets much closer up
Wixom is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the southern border of Lower Michigan and on the eastern border of Grand Traverse County. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. Wixom is part of the Lansing-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wixom were French traders in 1634 who named it "Isère." George Meigs, surveyor for Washtenaw County, mapmakers for Michigania Territory and Surveyor General for Upper Canada surveyed this area in 1794 as part of his report to Great Britain about Lake Huron's west side and its relationship to Mackinac Island. According to one account, Indians trading with Hurons called this place by different names including "Hochelaga," "Wabasha," "Ixelles" or "Xeres." In 1803, John Jacob Astor founded an fur company here which became known as The Astors. The town was platted in 1814 when James Purdy laid out a town square which still exists today. In 1829, Wixom had a population of 350 people according to US Census data; it grew rapidly during the 1830s with new businesses being established such as a brewery and distillery (the last standing until 1978). During that time also many homes were built throughout downtown Wixom; much of what is left today dates back to this time period including two churches (one from 1833), four schools (1830-1910), three hotels/motels (1830s-1920s), several stores/cafes (1800s-1920s), five churches (one 1870) and more than sixty residences! In 1840 there were only seventy residents living within its limits but by 1860 it had grown again reaching 1,200 people! Many citizens came from outside the area such as Elijah Hicks from Ohio who started an agricultural cooperative in 1850 then served as village president from 1865 until 1870; he also donated land for what is now State Fair Park. By 1890 there were over 3,000 residents living within its borders making it one of America's fastest growing towns! By 1910 most businesses closed down but some reopening like Lumbermen's News which continued until 1977 when it merged into J & J Milling Company Limited Partnership.; along with other local businesses went through various changes during prohibition era with many becomingillegal due to prohibition laws regarding alcohol sales However some like Gambling Hall continued operation long after Prohibition ended although business did decline significantly after that date During World War II American military personnel relocated here resulting in a rapid growth rate (>5000%!). Residents worked on both home front jobs manufacturing munitions or going off to serve their country(such as construction workers) while other businesses like grocery stores prospered thanks largely to wartime demand for food products especially meat products! After war ended residents slowly returned back into their everyday lives but growth rates slowed somewhat during recession years until 2000 when they reached levels similar to before World War II but began slowly increasing again starting around 2007 through 2016!! Wixom is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ingham County. The population was 7,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wixom was founded on July 1, 1837, byJohn H. Wixom and his wife Emma as a new village on the east side of Gratiot River. The first post office in Wixom was established on July 1, 1837, by John H. Wixom and his wife Emma with their infant son George H., becoming open to residents of all counties within Ingham County at that time. The first store in Wixom operated under the name "The Store" until 1840 when it became "The Grosse Pointe Log House". On October 15, 1851, James Fenton opened a general store in what is now downtown Wixom which became one of the most popular spots for shopping in town. At this time there were only four stores operating in town with a total population of about 150 people! In 1865-1866 three hotels were built (the Arcade Building (now known as First National Bank), Hotel Delaware and The Greek Georges). They each had two floors and were used for meetings, dances, conventions etc... during that time period many important events took place in towns across central Michigan including the opening of Mackinac Island Railroad Station directly across from downtown Detroit on June 3rd 1865 by George Stephenson! Waxon street running north-south was named after Governor Augustus Porter Winthrop who also donated land to form what is now University Park while Judge Augustus Murtagh donated land east of Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue which later became State Road #6 connecting Ann Arbor to Detroit! As Michigan's capital city grew rapidly following its incorporation as a state in 1868 more businesses began moving into downtown Lansing making it difficult for merchants near State Road 6 to keep up with demand! On December 8th 1870 an ordinance was passed allowing citizens petitioning for incorporation or alteration to be placed before the governor for approval! This ordinance allowed future mayors such as John Roemer (who would become mayor twice) to get involved directly with government affairs instead of waiting through political appointment processes!! In 1871 Mayor Roemer merged City Hall & Jail into one building creating what is now called OneState Center which still stands today!! It wasn't until 1923 when City Hall burned down resulting in another reconstruction that we discovered our current northern limit facing east off Gratiot River just beyond OneState Center originally known as Butternut Street!!!!!!!!!
