In 1902, an elementary school opened here for students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade; this school closed in 1957 after serving dual roles as both a public school and a convent/ priory school for nuns who ran the nearby Mount Carmel Convent (now Holy Rosary Convent). Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, population 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the west bank of the Grand River, 25 miles (40 km) south-southwest of Lansing, the state capital. The name comes from "Wixomite," an Ottawa Indian word meaning "place where there are trees." The first settler in what became Wixom was James Hickey in 1824. He and his family built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the lower river and started trading with other settlers. By 1830, there were about 20 people living in what is now Wixom. In 1835, John McLaren settled near present-day downtown Wixom after moving from nearby Holland Township. In 1865, Leland Stanford purchased land along both banks of the river for $10 per acre (4 ha). He founded Stanford University and began to build its campus here, which would eventually include 400 buildings on 8 acres (28 ha). The townspeople quickly made their presence felt by hosting various events within walking distance of their new university – such as monthly meetings for school trustees and elections to local government bodies – until it moved out to larger facilities across the river in 1868. Today's portion of Stanford University traces its roots back to that original site;today's residential neighborhoods form only a small fraction of that original campus area. In 1875, Henry Ford founded Detroit Institute School here after spending several years working as a teacher and tutor at nearby Hollandtown Academy. Ford went on to found four more schools throughout Michigan: Dearborn Heights High School (1902), Flint Hills Academy (1920), Oak Park Collegiate Institute (1963) and Wayne State University's Ross School of Education & Human Resources Administration Complex (2003).
