Wixom is a small city in the Wolverine Valley region of the Michigan Central United States. It is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) east of Grand Rapids and 50 miles (80 km) south of Detroit. As of the 2010 census, Wixom had a population of 382 residents. The city was founded in 1887 by two brothers, Hiram and Raymond Wixom, as part of a land run for farmers to purchase from the federal government. The town grew rapidly after it was designated as a town in 1907 and became an incorporated municipality in 1914. By the early 21st century, Wixom had outgrown its tiny downtown core and had moved into new buildings around three-quarters of a mile (1 km) west of Interstate 696 on State Street. Today, Wixom is known for its vibrant cultural scene and its many arts opportunities, including Fine Arts Center, Park District, Museum of Art & History, Wright State University School Of Music & Dance, Stonington Community Library System and more than 100 businesses that offer services or products related to arts and culture. In addition to its large population size – nearly 1 million people live within 30 miles (48 km) – Wixom has strong economic ties to other central Michigan cities such as Lansing and Auburn Hills. These relationships have helped make Wixom one of the most economically diverse cities in Michigan. The history of Wixom can be traced back to 1887 when Hiram Wrixon purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) along Saginaw River north of present-day Grand Rapids for $5 per acre ($50 per hectare). This land ran through what is now Wixtown Township on the east side of Detroit Lakes National Wildlife Refuge on the west side – both properties were part of what are now Muskegon Heights neighborhood on Old Fort Wayne Road between Belle Isle Boulevard/I-94 and I-275/Milepost Road east off I-275 near where current day Mount Pleasant Avenue runs parallel to I-94 across from Belle Isle Boulevard/Milepost Road). At that time there were no towns or villages within 10 miles (16 km), let alone within 3 miles (7 km), so Hiram’s purchase represented an important milestone in northwest Michigan history. The village formed around Hiram’s store on Gratiot Avenue which traded with other villages upriver along Saginaw River before landing at Grand Rapids at Plymouth Wharf on Gratiot Avenue opposite Huron Street today’s Old Market Place area today’s First Baptist Church building site where Depot House now stands also just east off Gratiot Ave., next door today's Masonic Temple building site today's old Haggerty Store Building Site which still stands - these all lie adjacent to present day US Highway 31 between Gratiot Ave./Old Market Place area northwest corner original Grosse Pointe Farms Rd./Grand Trunk Highway @ exit 12 south then northeast corner original Ottawa Rd./today's Woodward Ave.(Hiram bought this land from John Carpentier who received it as part of treaty settlement following War Of 1812)).
