Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the western shore of Lake Wixom. The population was 3,822 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city within Muskegon County and one of its six cities. It is also the home to Grand Valley State University, which has a main campus in Wixom and satellite campuses in Ann Arbor and East Lansing. The first European settlement in what is now Muskegon County was by French fur traders from Quebec during the 17th century. In 1814, General Harrison's army invaded Canada and destroyed Fort Detroit; this event led to increased trade with Great Britain and made Wixom an important center for commerce on the lower courses of the Huron River system. In 1835, construction began on what would become Grand Valley State Normal School (now Grand Valley State University), which opened in 1837 as what would be America's first institution of higher education specifically for women students. The town grew rapidly around this school until it reached its current size by 1860 when other towns were annexed into Wixom along with land east of downtown that became part of present-day Township Parkland neighborhood on Monroe Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue NW. During World War II, many soldiers stationed at nearby Camp Hastings had their barracks near downtown where they could eat dinner or take a quick break before going off to fight; this created much traffic congestion around downtown that eventually led to Mayor Harry Bower's plan to build new Civic Center Drive as a expressway through downtown that solved most of these problems. Wixom was founded on December 12, 1847 by George W. Haskell and his wife, Eliza Jane Haskell. The town was named after the creek that ran through it. The first settler in Wixom was Isaac Chamberlain. In 1850, the town had a population of 10 people and a store. A post office was established in Wixom in 1851 and mail service began from the town to Lansing on April 1, 1853 In 1863, an act of the Michigan Legislature created Kalamazoo County. Wixom became part of Kalamazoo County and lost its status as a village. On October 15, 1865, an act of the Michigan legislature renamed Wixom "Lansing." On January 14, 1886, an act of the Michigan legislature changed the name of Kalamazoo County to Oakland County. In 1889, following passage of Act 979 (the Flint-area water crisis), Wixom lost its charter as a village and became incorporated as a city with at least one thousand residents. In 1907 it merged with survivalist colony "The Grapes" to form "Wixom-Grape City". However this merger also failed because that colony only had 605 residents while Wixom's population reached 2200 by 1907
