Wixom is a city in the Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. Wixom is part of the Grand Rapids–Md., MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settler in what is now Wixom was Daniel Boone in 1799. A post office called Wixom was established in 1836, and had a population of 5 inhabitants. At that time there were no railroads between Detroit and Muskegon County so goods deliveries took place by wagon or horseback. In 1849, Wixom's first school building burned down; however, another school was built soon afterwards. It wasn't until 1861 when an act to erect public buildings authorized the erection of a county courthouse which stood on what is now Maple Street and Haggerty Boulevard. This building served as the courthouse until 1907 when it became known as the State Capitol Building due to statehood being granted to Michigan that year. On January 1, 1909, Wixom's first library opened with 106 books total on 7 floors including basement! The library closed in 1978 but reopened as part of Grand Rapids Public Library system on November 15th 1998 after several years closure due to budget cuts within LPCL (the predecessor organization). In 1957-1958 two blocks east of where Interstate 94 meets Eighth Street (now John F Kennedy Boulevard) was erected what is now known as downtown Wixom despite protest from some business owners who felt their property would be lost if downtown moved closer to I-94
