In 2002, Kmart announced that it would close 100 stores across North America over five years beginning in 2001 due to economic conditions; however, unlike other major retailers such as Toys “R” Us, Kmart did not rely solely upon physical stores but also operated e-commerce sites such as Kids Department and Home Depots.[3] In response, Mayor George Dormer formed a Committee for Economic Development within City Hall to develop ambitious plans for revitalization including creating jobs outside of retail inside businesses such as restaurants and nightlife venues like Joe’s Pub & Grille[4], attracting investment from private individuals and venture capitalists[5]; these efforts led to Kmart moving back into downtown Detroit starting with their former flagship store at 5 Woodward Avenue in 2006[6]. Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Rome Township. The population was 15,679 at the 2010 census, up from 14,903 in 2000. It is part of the Detroit–Dearborn–Ann Arbor metropolitan area. The city was founded on November 16, 1837 by wagon train passengers traveling westward from Canada to what is now Kansas City, Missouri. Wixom's first post office was established on December 1, 1837. The town charter was granted on February 17, 1840. Wixom became a village on July 1, 1854. On October 25, 1956 it became a city after being approved by voters via an election referendum ratified by the mayor and council members. The original name for Wixom was "Benton". In 1861 when Lansing County was organized and made up of sections that were then located in each township (Rome Township included), Benton Township withdrew from Rome Township to form its own municipality under the new government structure because Benton felt that Rome had been too restrictive about allowing more than one store per street and too quiet during market hours without prior warning to residents; accordingly he chose instead to become an independent municipality with his own library and schoolhouse which still stands today as part of downtown Wixom’s history museum complex—the only building remaining from when Benton Township merged into Rome Township in 1861!
