They named their new community Wixton because they thought it would be an easy spot for travelers to find since it lay on the great wayfarer highway called "The Great Road". The town grew rapidly due to people coming to work at various factories located nearby including John Drysdale's flour mill and George Stephenson's electrical company. By 1907, when Wixom became the first city in Michigan to be incorporated as a village, it had over 10 homes and around 100 residents. In 1914, during World War I (1914-18), local companies helped contribute $1 million dollars towards helping war-time veterans get back on their feet by providing them with homes and two years of free housing while they were still working off their enlistments or hunting for jobs afterwards. This effort led directly into later years when many people chose not return home permanently once war ended because they found better opportunities elsewhere or because they simply could not afford those costs anymore. Wixom, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Lapeer County. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. Wixom is part of the Detroit–Warren–Wilmington, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by Andrew Jackson and his brother-in-law, George Allen, as a railroad junction on the Grand Trunk Railway between Detroit and Lansing. The town was renamed after General John Custer during the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 while US troops were besieging Fort Robinson on Mount Rushmore National Monument. It was also home to Wixom Air Force Base from 1959 to 2006 when it moved to Elmira, New York; and again from 2007 until its closure in 2011. In September 2013 Wixom City Council passed an ordinance that would allow forwidowhood succession rights for city residents who die without children under 21 years old living within two miles of their residences on October 1st each year since incorporation as a city charter limits such succession rights to those over 61 years old with no children living within two miles of their residences on January 1st each year (the mayor has authority over any ordinances passed by council). Wixom's downtown is located close to Interstate 75 which forms its eastern border and makes up most of its west side; it borders Lapeer County eastward along I-75 then becomes Livingston County southward before ending at Washtenaw County's Skaneateles Lake beyond which lies Ann Arbor Township
Wixom was founded in 1859 by John W. Watts and his wife, Eliza Jane. The town became a railroad junction in 1865 and prospered as a manufacturing center for wagons, cartons, hats, boots and other goods. In the 1920s it experienced a population growth rate that exceeded that of any other Michigan city, but declined during the Great Depression. By the late 1960s the City had regained some of its former prosperity through initiatives such as the establishment of a park system and an increase in employment opportunities within the local community. In recent years Wixom has seen an increase in population due to increased suburban development around it, although most jobs have remained localized. Today Wixom is home to about 12,000 residents with a strong economy based on services and industry
