In 2000, then-Mayor James Meeks announced plans for development around Interstate 95 within blocks of downtownWixom so that "downtown would be central to all aspects of life." This plan failed to gain favor with residents who felt their neighborhoods were already well developed without any need for additional commercial or residential development outside their borders; furthermore, some believed that I-95 would have negatively impacted traffic congestion on local streets while providing no economic stimulus for those located within walking distance of I-95 only minutes away from work but unable to travel out because they relied on private transportation services or trains instead. In 1841, Wixom became one of three townships in Washtenaw County; it retains this status to this day. The first college to be established in Michigan was the Washtenaw Agricultural College (now University of Michigan) which opened its doors in 1846 near what is now Wixom Center. The townspeople were so proud of their new college that they decided to name their new city after it – henceforth known as "Washtenaw City". In 1861, when Michigan seceded fromunion and formed its own nation, Wixom voted to remain part of that country rather than become part of Detroit metropolitan area. This decision led to much controversy within the city limits over whether or not to continue paying taxes to Detroit – an issue still unresolved today. In 1958, when Washtenaw County merged with other counties within Michiganshare into Wayne County, Wixom voted against joining that county due to concerns about job security for its citizens. As a result, Wixom remains an independent municipality unto this day with no say in how Wayne County conducts itself politically or economically. In recent years there has been much discussion about moving the University of Michigan out of downtown Flint and into more rural areas due to rising costs associated with maintaining large urban campuses statewide; however no decisions have yet been made regarding such a move.
