Wixom is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskegon County. The name "Wixom" originated from the Indian word Wichomi meaning "site for building." In the 1820s, a group of settlers called themselves "The Wixons." The first post office in Wixom was established in 1826. By 1850, there were over 100 residents in Wixom. In 1870, when the town was organized as a village, it had a population of just under 150 people. However, by 1880, Wixom had grown to over 1,500 people and became an important center for agricultural production in northern Michigan. In 1912-1913, white farmers from Milwaukee started to settle around what is now downtown Wrixom after being driven out of their homes by powerful Native American tribes led by Chief Tecumseh Sherman. The area that would ultimately become downtown Wrixom was mostly swampy land with few trees or buildings; however developer George Naylor (1861-1936) decided to make it into a thriving community with high-quality architecture and extensive public works projects like streetlights and water mains. These initiatives helped make downtown Wrixom one of the most advanced communities in Michigan during its early years and are still remembered today as one of its most vibrant neighborhoods today. In 1916-1920s during World War I local munitions manufacturing companies produced munitions for Ulysses S Grant's military forces which continues until present day as part of Grand Rapids' small but active industrial sector; while also contributing significantly to economic development throughout Muskegon County overall including creating thousands jobs across several industries such as engineering and manufacturing throughout both wartime years 1917-1920 and 1929-1935 – twinning with Flint during these same years consecutively). Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Saginaw County. The population was 24,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Wixom" comes from an Ottawa Indian word meaning "southwest point." The first settler in what is now Wixom was John Fenton, who purchased land east of present-day Wixom on October 9, 1814 from Chief Joseph Potts for $2 per acre (or $4 per mile). He named his new settlement "Fenton's Landing", after himself and his brother-in-law John Fenton Jr., also known as John Fenton the Elder (1786-1847), a pioneer fur trader and later Mayor of Buffalo, New York City. In 1824, William Lavin bought two blocks north of Fenton's Landing from him for $25 or £10 per acre ($40 or €30 per hectare). He called his new town "Lavinville". In 1830, he sold all his properties except one block to Isaac Niles for $115 ($175 or €1305). Niles renamed it "Nilesville". In 1836, Solomon Northrup founded the town of Northrop with land near modern day Wixom along with other towns within Saginaw County: Battle Creek Township on the west side of Huron River between Lakes Superior and St Clair; Goodrich Township on both sides of Grand River between its mouth at Lake Huron and its source at Muskegon Heights; Big Rapids Township on both sides of river just south of where it empties into Lake Michigan; they were separated by a piece of land that still forms partof Wixom today. All these towns were incorporated as Villageships under their respective village presidents until 1907 when they became cities under mayor control which continued until 1959 when villages lost their CITY status effective January 1st following enactment by State Legislature A bill entitled “An Act to Consolidate Cities” authorizes consolidation but does not provide funding so this did not take place . On November 20th 1912 Henry Ford placed an advertisement in The Detroit News seeking citizens to fill a position as Tax Collector with pay scale from $1-$5/week inclusive . 8 men filled this position Richfield Park School District #1 responded immediately setting up shop in front Of Piggly Wagon Emporium & started charging customers by phone . They charged 25 cents each When collected over board they would split equally among themselves Sharecroppers could only collect Taxes ½ Value
Wixom was founded in 1868 by John W. Mason and his brother-in-law, George H. French. The town was named for Wolverines who had helped fight in the American Civil War. In 1883, Wixom became a city after it passed an act of Congress. The city's first mayor was James A. Caldwell and its first business manager was Phebe French Howe.
