The population reached 30,000 by 1870; however, during World War II much of that growth stopped because so many people were drafted into military service or fled to war-torn Europe or Asia. Today about 12% of Wixom's population are employed within City limits while 82% are self-employed citizens who own their own businesses outside city limits (the remainder being employed within City limits by government entities). In 2000, George Washington Carver Elementary School opened just east of downtown along Woodward Avenue serving students from grades PK-4th grade with guidance from local Extension Service staff members assigned full time to serve students through out their school years

Wixom, Michigan is a small city in the US state of Michigan. It is located on the east side of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, about south of Lansing and north of Grand Rapids. The population was 16,898 at the 2010 census. Wixom is the fifth-largest city in Kalamazoo County, Michigander. In addition to being a major center for technology and entrepreneurship, Wixom also has strong agricultural and commercial businesses as well as schools that educate children from pre-kindergarten through high school. The first people to live in what is now Wixom were Potawatomi Indians who arrived around 1800. The first white person to live here was John Pillsbury, an American Revolutionary War veteran who came overland from Canada in 1795. He founded a log cabin here and named it Pillsbury Township after himself and his son John Pillsbury Jr., who had accompanied him on his trip across the North American continent. In 1807, General Anthony Wayne built a fort at Fort George on Lake Superior for military purposes during the War of 1812 against Great Britain. The fort served as a base for operations throughout western Michigan until 1840 when it was abandoned due to its remote location and lack of defense capability against Indian attacks. A new fort was built at Battle Creek on the west bank of Detroit River in 1847 by United States forces during their campaign against General Tecumseh Sherman’s Indian Expedition led by Ulysses S Grant; this fort remained active until 1863 when it became ruinous due to weather factors and Union Army bombarding by cannons along its perimeter which destroyed much of it including its barracks buildings with Native Americans living within them as hostages; all remaining artifacts from this period are now housed at Wayne State University’s Museum Of Art & Design In 1871, Henry Ford bought land adjacent to what is now I-75 between Clinton Avenue (now Oakland Boulevard)and Holland Road (now campus Drive), which he called Dearborn Heights because he believed that Detroit would become too large an Orange County town if he didn't have land available closer to downtown where people could work shopping and attend services. Ford started production on his Model T car here in 1903 before moving it downstream into Highland Park near Rouge River before finally turning it upriver into Dearborn Heights where it continued production until 1978 Ford's company produced more cars than any other automaker during World War II but closed down after the war because demand for gasoline dropped off precipitously following victory over Japan . However, Dearborn Heights still remains one of America's largest civic districts with various cultural attractions such as galleries, theaters, art museums etc .. In 1947 Drury Lumber Company moved their manufacturing operations from Cadillac to nearby Orion Township , just west of downtown Lansing so they could keep their plant open year round although their lumber business only lasted two years before closing down again due to low prices withinMichigan In 1958 voters approved passage ofartering Act No 710 which designated Wixom “the City OF Technology” while giving residents exclusive rights To Use And All Other Appropriate Rights Reserved For Municipal Center District No 1 Hereinafter Known As THE CITY CENTER DISTRICT OF WIXOM INCorporated WITH ALL OTHER RESPECTIVE CITY ORDINANCES Solemnly Set Forth And agreeed To By The People Of Wixom On November 3rd 1959 . Withdrawn From Jurisdictional Status On March 20th 1961 By Resolution Of The City Council
