Wixom is a small community in the Michigan Department of State's Eastern District. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights-Wixom Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1875 by Wm. J. Wixom and other settlers who arrived on an expedition from Lansing to find water for their farmstead and to explore new land north of Lansing. After a year, they returned with a wagonload of goods and set up shop on the present site of town, which they named "Wixom." In 1876, the first post office was opened in town, and mail was sent home by boat across the Huron River until 1895 when railroads were built through that area and mail became available from Lansing or Detroit. In 1912, Wixom mayor Dolphus Boice organized a local strike against what he saw as high rates for phones service being offered by telephone companies within his community. This led to prohibition of telephones in town until 1933 when regulations were changed so that towns could have them if they voted to do so (a measure supported by many in Wixom). This ban led to some businesses such as Rheem Manufacturing Company taking over phone service; however, this did not stop people from using their own phones or using public phone lines which continued until about 1978 when all public phone service ended in Wixom due to budget cuts made by then-Mayor James Ahern (who served until 2001). Wixom, Michigan is a town located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,527 at the 2010 census. Wixom is home to the only public high school in the Upper Peninsula and also offers many post-secondary educational opportunities including four colleges and universities as well as two professional schools: one for dentists and one for veterinarians. The first settlers in what is now Wixom were French Canadians who migrated from Quebec in 1795. They founded a trading post on the Rouge River near present day Wixom Township. In 1810, they established a permanent settlement on land that would become part of Wixom Township when it was organized under the new government of Michigan Territory in 1812. The original village of Wixom was laid out by fur traders George Carleton and Isaac Nibley on October 15, 1814, just east of present-day downtown Wixom. It consisted of a few small log buildings and consisted mainly of farmers and their families who operated their farmlands using traditional methods such as husbandry, fishing, trapping, canning goods, lumbering and shipbuilding. In 1828, when Michigan became an independent country following its independence from Great Britain, the Village voted to name their community after President James Kapp (1797-1865), who had played an important role in supporting America's reconstruction effort following World War I. The community's first store opened its doors on December 1st that year at 209 Main Street which served as headquarters for local merchants until 1840 when a new store building was erected at 6th Avenue North (later known as Griggs Boulevard). That same year saw another important milestone when Charles Saginaw built his sawmill on temporary ground east of Main Street which began production providing essential economic stability during what would be known as an agricultural depression years later called "the bad times". From 1840 until about 1870 there were no telephone service or other means for residents to communicate with each other so trade was necessary between farmers and traders with goods being brought back overland along roads such as Griggs Boulevard or through water routes across frozen Lake Superior When wire services arrived starting around 1910 wires were installed throughout downtown including service to schools up 2nd Avenue north where electricity came from hydro power Plants . One notable event took place during this time when Mrs.. Jetta Bryant (1890-1976) donated $5000 to help finance improved phone lines within the community which linked all homes together making it possible for citizens to have instant communication with family members anywhere in America without havingto leave their homes
