Wixom, Michigan is a town in Wayne County, Michigan. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Wixom is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Wixom was French trader Antoine de la Salle on July 5, 1796. La Salle named the site "Erie" after his home state of France and measured the depth of water at 9 feet (2 m). He also made note that there were no trees or other plants hereabouts and that he had never seen anything like this before in his travels through North America. It wasn't until 1807 when George Stephenson traveled through Wayne County and noted an area to the east where "a rich sandy soil lay spread out for about three miles." He called it Waterloo Township but soon changed it to Wixom Township because there were already people living here and they wanted their name given to a place where they could business from. The first permanent settler in what is now Wixom was John White in 1828. He bought 640 acres (240 ha) from Nicholas Bicknell for £350 sterling ($660 US). White built a cabin near present-day downtown Wixom on what would become known as East Street and started farming the land which he divided into four fields: one for corn, one for beans, one for potatoes, and one for oats. Wixom is a small town in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The community was founded in 1855 by immigrants from Hungary, and has been a cultural and social center for residents since then. The town's history is intertwined with that of its namesake, Wixom Springs, which lies within its boundaries. The first settlers to what is now Wixom arrived in 1855, spurred by the promise of easy access to water at Wixom Springs. By 1870, the community had grown enough to require a school district, and soon there were public businesses and a few homes. In 1885, Wixom became part of the Huron County Agricultural District; this gave it more autonomy and allowed for development outside of the town's borders. That same year saw the opening of Wixom's first post office; until that time, mail was delivered directly to households or sent through relatives or friends. In 1916, when Huron County disbanded and merged into Saginaw County, Wixom became an unincorporated township again. It wasn't until 1958 that the township adopted its present name - based on nearby Rochester (then called Winthrop) - after becoming one of several Michigan towns incorporated as villages during Gov. John Mapes' administration in 1948. Over time, much has changed about Wixom: its demographics have shifted dramatically (from majority white during World War II to over 60% Hispanic today), while its economy has diversified significantly (from agriculture to manufacturing). However, many aspects of town life remain unchanged - such as lively music festivals throughout summertime and robust local politics that often result in heated arguments between residents on street corners or inside their homes!
