Wixom is a city in the Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren metropolitan area. Wixom is included in the Grand Rapids–Mwoode–Point Loma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wixom were French traders and missionaries in 1785 who named it "Isabella". They thought it was an Indian name. The first permanent settler was John Cushing who arrived in 1801. He built a log cabin on his farm which still stands today known as "Cushing's Cabin" or simply "The Cabin." In 1834, Simeon Wright settled here and started a small mill that produced flour for local stores and also made cheese and butter from raw milk. In 1836, he sold his interest in the mill to Nathan Myrick who ran it until 1863 when it passed into hands of James Fenton Jr., son of James Fenton Sr.. By 1870, there were 10 businesses operating within one mile (1 km) of downtown Wixom with a total payroll of $129,000. A new courthouse was built in 1903 by Jeptha Meeks under his supervision as part of plans for town government reform after approval by Michigan Governor Alfred Pomeroy Chisholm II. The cornerstone for this structure was laid on July 5th, 1903 by Revd John Hennikerford of Grace Episcopal Church before an audience including then-Mayor Walter Burchfield and Judge Augustus Tuttle from Ann Arbor. In 1916, Gertrude Sprague donated land north of Market Street to become Sprague Park which became home to Wixom High School (now known as Wayne State University) prior to its official dedication on October 11th 1921 by Mayor Edwin Ewing followed by a picnic attended by dignitaries including US Senator Arthur Vandenberg and First Lady Alice Paul along with speeches from Mayor Sprague himself and Mrsgruden’s father Elijah Sprague Sr..
