The town began growth when land was donated by local farmers in 1807; early settlers included Nicholas Scranton Sr., who served as a justice of the peace (and later mayor) from 1810 to 1827; Salmon Pyle; James Sibley; Elias Howe; Aaron Burr (the last U.S. president); Major General David Dixon Porterfield (in command during World War II); Augustus Saint Gaudens designed Wixom's original courthouse square in 1829- 1830 The town reached its peak population size with 30,000 residents in 1920 but declined rapidly following World War II because of demobilization and other factors such as loss of manufacturing jobs in Detroit combined with increased competition from other nearby cities such as Flint and Warrensburg Township

Wixom was founded on February 17, 1837 by George W. Smith and his brother-in-law, James D. Bigham. The town was named for a place in Scotland where the Smiths had been living since 1824. The first post office in Wixom was established on December 1, 1837. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses in the town. In 1865, Wixom became a city and has remained so ever since. The downtown area of Wixom is home to many interesting buildings including the State Capitol building and the United States Courthouse Annex which are both significant landmarks in Michigan's history. Other notable buildings in the downtown area include: the Masonic Temple (1890), Pembina Hall (1911), and J.B. Hunt Company Building (1921). Today, Wixom is a thriving community with many cultural attractions such as its own music festival, art galleries, theaters, restaurants and more!
Wixom was founded on May 5, 1848 by Isaac Wixom and his wife Sarah. The first store in town was opened on the corner of Main and Union Streets. In 1865, Wixom became the county seat of Ottawa County. On December 6, 1875, Wixom was renamed to its current name after James M. Wixom, a banker and politician who served as mayor from 1948 to 1955 and as an unsuccessful candidate for United States Senate in 1956.
